Slog - Comments on Media Consolidation Hearings Next Friday at Town Hall

The FCC is holding a public hearing on rule changes that would allow more media cross ownership and consolidation. For example, the new rules would allow one company to own a newspaper, TV station, and radio station in the same market. (That's alarming, obviously, but I must say, talking about newspapers and TV stations, and radio stations seems a little archaic.) FCC chairman Kevin Martin just announced (this week) his intent to hold the last public hearing in Seattle. Earlier today Sen. Maria Cantwell and Rep. Jay Inslee sent a letter to Martin asking him to give the public time...

Hmmm If the changes go through Murdoch could buy the company that owns the Stranger. THAT would be really interesting. You should check out the proposed rule changes Martin wants to do.

That the hearing would be held here has been long known. What we've been waiting for is a hard date, which apparently Jonathan at RTM has finally received.

The GOP-controlled FCC board has really been trying to sweep these new owner regs under the table, but thanks to a few diligent folks like RTM, they haven't been able to ram this through without huge public outcry.

No doubt they're going to get an earful this time as well, just as the two Democratic members of the board did when they were in town a few months ago for an "informal" hearing.
