Is it boring? Sometimes. Comes with the territory when you're doing that kind of work.

Is it hackneyed? No way—IV is far more ambitious and interesting than Seattle School (I wasn't around for that year's Genius Awards and I don't think I would've endorsed them).

Sorry you hate them, M, but they're good at what they do. You might not like that kind of performance (which is reasonable—it is sometimes boring and pretentious), but that doesn't mean they don't do it well.

(a) Why do you think they're good at what they do? For that matter, what do you think they're trying to do? bore the audience? piss them off? Make them wish they'd spent their money elsewhere? (I'm not asking these facetiously. I have often thought that these were EXACTLY what IV was trying to do. Their program at their most recent OtB performance made it clear they don't care about the audience at all.)


(b) Even if they're good at what they do, this does not mean they're doing good art. Imagine an "artist" whose art consists in the person sitting in a theatre and surfing the net for 3 hours. If that's what they set out to do, they can be very good at it. But as art, it sucks.


By the way, I'm not against performance art that involves mess or noise or randomness or things that are unconnected to each other or pieces that lack narrative or anything like that. But having mess, noise, randomness, etc. by itself doesn't make the piece good. Some non-conventional performance art is at least entertaining, or makes you think, or takes you somewhere you weren't expecting to go, or SOMETHING. IV just bores you and makes you think, "Great, another bunch of Cornish kids trying really hard to stand out from the crowd and they just end up re-inventing the wheel. BOOOOO-RING!"
