I knew there was a reason why the organic apple at PCC was more filling and better than the store-brought woody apple at Fred Meyer ...

You might want to keep your mid-February clear. There's a rumor that he'll be in town for the book tour and might be giving a talk at a local venue.

@2: Never. I hate readings in general, and this one--imagine a room full of sanctimonious foodies like myself!--would be one of the worst.

Way back in the 40s the country's first food writing icon M F K Fisher was making all the same points. Her prose is quite a bit better than Pollan's too. The compilation of her works The Art of Eating is probably readily available at most libraries, and one might consider reading part of it while one waits for Pollan's book to make it's way to you courtes of the SPL.

66 people ahead of me, and SPL's only ordered six books. Didn't the council just give them a bunch of extra money to increase their collection? Thanks for the tip, though - otherwise, the line would be longer than the wait for Stanford International Elementary School.

@1, even organic red delicious apples taste great. I'd given up on them when I still bought conventional.

Agree with kinaidos, he is not a good writer. He gives good soundbite, but prose .... not so much.

@11 - have to agree, the quality factor is why I buy most of my apples at PCC now.

But aren't we glad to have a $160 million Central Library? Obviously a huge, underutilized building is more useful than books, open hours, and staff.

A library isn't really for books anymore. That's last century. To me the downtown library is like the lobby of an airport, it's a place for my thoughts to take flight. Also the new Library makes a much better rental location for parties.
