Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father…

posted by on November 29 at 8:45 AM

A reputed leader of a gang in San Francisco’s Western Addition was arrested Wednesday in Novato, where police said he lived and kept a half pound of crack cocaine in a bedroom closet within reach of his two 5-month-old twin sons.

Paris Moffet, 29, identified as a leader of the Eddy Rock gang, was arrested on charges of possession of crack cocaine for sale, possession of ecstasy and child endangerment. He also is charged with additional gang allegations. Moffet’s girlfriend, Delicia Mitchell, 31, also was arrested on drug and child endangerment charges….

The cribs of the twin boys were in the same room where the drugs were recovered, he said. Two other children, ages 11 and 15, also were in the home. All four children were in protective custody.

When I was 3 years old my (gay) father got into a disagreement with some bikers about some speed he was buying from them and, given the reputation of these particular bikers, took the precaution of borrowing an assault rifle from another dealer friend of his. One day while he was digging in the hall closet for something he set the rifle on the floor behind him and I walked up, picked up the gun, and fired a spray of bullets through the wall, into the bedroom of our housemate, who was sleeping. The bullets went through the room at an upward angle that missed her entirely, but that was really just luck.

I like how your response to prejudices aimed at groups you identify with is always counter-prejudice. It's sort of cute in a "hate that hate made" way. I'm sure if you just keep at it, someday it'll all balance out to perfect social justice for everyone. Not that you should concern yourself with that, of course. Perfect social justice for you will be more than adequate.

Judah, I have little patience for you today.

The point of these posts is not to gain social justice for one group at the expense of another. It is to show that the main argument for denying social justice to one group (gays and lesbians) is illogical and therefore unfair.

How much more clearly do you need that spelled out?

child endangerment? clearly these are bad parents... but i'm fairly certain they would keep the coke away from the kids as a general business practice. it's like they are just adding on crimes (perhaps deservedly so) past the initial violation. and yet they can't figure out one charge to attach to lori drew (of the megan meier suicide), not communicating sexual material to a minor, not cyber stalking, not harassment... nothing.

No, @4. According to the story: "They were kept in an area accessible to anyone who can open a closet - they were not locked or kept in a way that the kids would not have access to them." Remember too, that there were 2 older kids who also, and possibly more likely, could get at them too.

Good thing I couldn't care less, huh?

Yes, and it's a crude and stupid argument addressed to a pack of bigots who are likely to neither read nor appreciate Dan's point. The best he can hope for is that someone in the mainstream media picks it up on a slow news day and it enters the popular debate (like santorum), but it doesn't advance the discourse. It implies that conclusions can be drawn from a small sample, which is a bullshit argument no matter who it's aimed at.

What it utterly fails to address is the underlying difficulty of gay parenting, which is that it requires judicial intervention in a way that straight parenting doesn't. But the parenting mechanisms that gays use, and which receive judicial oversight -- surrogacy, adoption and so on -- are all mechanisms that we generally want judicial oversight on. In order for gays and lesbians to have the same kind of unreviewed parenting rights that straights have, the review process needs to be altered or removed. Dan's pitch assumes that bigots are the obstruction to such alteration or removal of the judicial review mechanisms of mediated parenting, but his approach won't remove the bigotry from the system or change the bigots minds so he's basically just being a dickhead.

Not that I have a problem with being a dickhead generally, obviously, but he's being disingenuous about it and you're buying into his bullshit.

they are bad parents, and likely stupid people. but a 5 month old child, even with help from a twin sibling, cannot open a closet to retrieve coke.

i mean come on, some coke dealers may be idiots, but they are not in the business of losing coke. or maybe they put it there when the police showed up. or maybe the police said it was within reach. but surely we can bust coke dealers for being coke dealers, and get CPS involved for that reason alone, no?

Judah? Can I send you a copy of my book? I addressed those issues at length in The Kid. And I'm not for altering the review process when it comes to adoption or foster parenting. Where do you get that from? And bigots imposing that review process on teh gays isn't the point. You're a smart guy. Willful obtuseness doesn't become you.

Western Addition?
That poor guy lives in the fucking ghetto, and the two kids can get crack every five feet in that neighborhood anyway.

How a homo that is as self loathing as Dan Savage can adopt a child is beyond me. All these posts do is demonstrate how he still cannot embrace his own status as a gay parent. Otherwise, he wouldn't drag his young son to gay bars with him to parade him around either.

It's amazing what a little self respect looks like in comparison to these desperate pleas for attention and help.

Well, I meant to take DJ to the closing night of Pony, but they carded him and he couldn't get in. So I left him at Hot Moma's until 2 AM, then took him home. Damn door people.
