Every Child Deserves a Mother and a Father…

Warrant: Man Killed Toddler, Then Watched Football

A man charged with killing a 2-year-old in Groton told police he held her face against jets in a bathtub, then left her there and went to watch football, according to a search warrant unsealed this week.

Treau Bemis died in a bathtub at her aunt Kimberly Bemis’ house Sept. 16. Bemis’ fiance, Craig Betancourt, was baby-sitting while she was at work….

Kimberly had custody of Treau, who had been living with the couple and their 7-year-old daughter for about a year. The state Department of Children and Families had found Treau’s parents unfit to care for her.

"Kimberly Bemis and other relatives have said the little girl's death was a terrible accident. They could not be reached for comment."

Priceless. After the dude admits to holding the little girl's face in front of the bath jets till she went limp, the fiancee has the gall to call it a "terrible accident". My heart died a little bit reading that.

Well, if you want to get technical about it, "mother and father" don't really play into the story here. I mean, besides the "unfit to parent" part--which was of course relevant to the girl's life and living situation--but ultimately irrelevant to her actual death.

That said, how horrifying sad. A wholly little life, frivolously and violently destroyed.

Er, make that "wholly innocent."

But, Rose Red, these M&F posts are a response to folks who insist that a child, if it can't be raised by its opposite-sex biological parents, simply must be placed in a home with opposite-sex foster or adoptive parents. It is, according to Mitt Romney, Gary Bauer, Michael Savage, et all, "child abuse" to place a child in a home with two gay male parents or two lesbian parents.

Where are "Daddy Dobbie", "Suck my Peter LaBarbera", and "Phuck me Phelps" when these things happen?

Dan, you wanna do us all a favor? Quit simply linking to outrageous stories, and start giving us facts and dirt on the inadequecies of the agencies that are placing these kids and the judges signing off on them.

As a former placement kid myself, I can tell you that as much culpability for these tragedies lies with the poor investigations into allegations/suspicions, poor background checks, poor supervision, and poor follow-up as anything.

Oh, and for those of you that are disturbed by these kinds of tales, three things: If you've got a law degree, join CASA. If you have deep pockets, donate to CASA. Otherwise, give hell to your county and state lawmakers.

Dead kids are sad, but most of those of us that live are fucked up forever.

This child had only an aunt and a fiance. The conservatives would say if the child were with her mother and father, this would not have happened.

What are you trying to prove Dan, straight men should not be left alone with children?

*sigh* I just. Don't. Get it.

I just can't imagine the head space of someone who can hold a kid underwater until she's drowned. I mean really do it, and not have it just be one of those random, horrible thoughts which is immediately dismissed in disgust from one's own head.

I guess its good that I can't. I guess that's why we call folks who do that stuff "monsters".

However hard I tell myself not to blame all male stepparents/boyfriends etc. for these things; sometimes the thought flickers through my mind that *only* lesbians should be foster/step/adoptive parents. It seems that in most of these cases it's an unbiorelated adult male who does the killing. I hope it's just confirmation bias, but I do wonder sometimes.

And I had a wonderful stepfather myself.

@13: Unfortunately, this kind of thing might be predisposed. It's common in animal groups to see a male kill the female's children from another male.
