Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise

posted by on November 16 at 9:29 AM

Does she spin clockwise, counter-clockwise, or both?

Clockwise? Your right brain is in charge. Counter-clockwise? Your left.

Explanations are here and here.

With every blink, she switches direction for me. Any wonder why my handwriting is so bad?

I get both, too. It started counter, then I looked away and it was clockwise, then it hiccuped and was back to counter, which it's been stuck on (or my brain has been stuck on, I guess) for a while. Hooray for the crazies!!!

open the comment box and place it on your screen right at the bottom of her foot (the one closest to the bottom of the pic and focus on the shadow. imagine her going one way and move the box and she does. then do the opposite.

Um her perpendicular foot would break off if she was spinning counter clockwise, only if i ignore her foot can i see it that way. Also if you follow here leg sticking out it's easy for here to look like she's just waving her leg back and forth ... of course again if you ignore her perpendicular foot.

If you can only see one direction, here's my suggestion:

Realize that since this is in two dimensions, the only real movement is left to right and back again. It's our imagination filling in the third dimension - as her leg moves right (for example), we're either imagining it to be in front of her or behind her.

So, when her leg is starting a horizontal sweep, ask yourself if you're seeing it in front or behind. If in front, say to yourself, "Behind!" If it's behind her, say to yourself, "In front!"

Personally, I always see it clockwise first, then she starts to alternate randomly. It wasn't until I tried the mental trick I just described that I was able to make her switch.

Let me know if this works for you,

@19: Good call! I could only see clockwise, and couldn't understand how it could appear counterclockwise at all, until I covered up the shadow and stared at it for a while longer. It switched. While watching it turn counterclockwise, I couldn't understand how it ever appeared clockwise. I looked away, and when I looked back, it was clockwise again.

Now my brain hurts.

But does it actually mean anything? I'd read that it's actually a lot more complicated than just 'left brain - right brain'.

I only see clockwise. I'm nominally left handed, although I am almost functionally ambidextrous (and oddly, getting moreso as I age). I am also fairly artistic. However, I am also extremely geometrically- and analytically-oriented (I come from a family of engineers), and I score really high on analytical, logical 'left brain' type tests.

I've understood that left-handedness MIGHT mean that the dominant hand is ruled by the artistic, intuitive side of one's brain, or it MIGHT mean that the functions of the two hemispheres are switched in lefties' brains, so that the concrete, logical side for them is on the right.

Okay, now I saw it counter clockwise, but only if I scrolled from the bottom of the image on up.

If you view it starting from the bottom, and then scroll up, it will move counter clockwise. But if you start viewing it from the top, it will appear to move clockwise. You cannot get it to visually switch unless you scroll completely away from it and scroll to the image from either respective point.

to change directions: close your eyes and envision her spinning the other direction. when you open your eyes she will be spinning that way.

also: when you first view her, if the leg is on the left, she will appear to spin counter. if it is on the right, clock-wise.

For those that complained about the nipples, I agree. And while they're at it, they should remove her breasts and her lips, too. Those might accidentally arouse somebody. And her buttocks, as well. Maybe even her feet.

It doesn't have anything to do with being left or right brained, the distinction between which is about 75% hooey anyways. It's just an excuse for people who are stupid, and ignorant about {math, art} to justify their stupidity.

The interesting thing is, I can see her going counter-clockwise even though her extended hand is clearly largest when it's "behind" her going that way, which is impossible from perspective -- she should be going clockwise, because then the hand appears near when it's large, far when it's small, the way it should be. But I can see her both ways.

What #6 said.

"This news article, like many others, ignores the true source of this optical illusion and instead claims it is a quick test to see if you use more of your right brain or left brain. This is utter nonsense, but the “right-brain/left brain” thing is in the public consciousness and won’t be going away anytime soon. Sure, we have two hemispheres that operate fine independently and have different abilities, but they are massively interconnected and work together as a seamless whole (providing you have never had surgery to cut your corpus callosum)."

I've analyzed the animation frame by frame. The extended/raised hand and foot are slightly smaller than their counterparts when they reach center-line (i.e. both the closest and furthest to/from POV). This is what allows you too see the image rotating either way.

when she is spinning clockwise she takes the form of a sexy graceful butterfly, flitting here and there, over a dew covered meadow to pan flutes and the happy twills of songbirds in love.

sheesh, I love people who buy into this crap.

Posted by Gomez | November 16, 2007 3:05 PM

whether she is going clockwise or counter doesn't matter because you are still perceiving a two dimensional image in three dimensions. the point is that your brain is creating added perspective to make sense of the movement you are seeing. it has nothing to do with all that left brain/right brain crap. the different directions she spins is created by your initial impression.
