An anti-religious bore is as boring as a religious bore.

Since you seem to be having trouble looking things up on snopes.com, I will help you out:

Origins: The piece quoted above likely began as a humor post to the newsgroup rec.humor in 1997. Its roots, however, are far older ... a story found in a 1962 book (reprinted from a 1960 magazine) is a mathematical "proof" that heaven is hotter than hell...

I think this may have been the very first email I ever received back in 1996 (not counting the one I sent to myself to test if my email was working).

Apology accepted.

I've never seen this before, actually. It's pretty lame.

An atheist engineer pal of mine had a paper copy of this on his cube wall in 1991.

If this isn’t a hoax, will the UW student who wrote this perfect theorem please stand up and take a bow.

That's me. Not my best work, but it was enough to get me an A.

Okay, guys, this needs to stop. If the Stranger staff can't be bothered to keep up with the various internet fads and hoaxes, at least spare us the annoyance of reading about them again and again years later.

i work in the main office at the uw chemistry department, and we get this email at least once a quarter from people asking to verify its validity.

As for whether or not this meme is old, let’s look at the different memes that exist in the world today.

Some of these memes are circulated through e-mail in the form of chain letters. Since there are more than one variety of these chain e-mails and since people have been stating for years to colleagues that this e-mails are reviled and will lead to deletion, we can surmise that chain e-mails are old meme.

Likewise, when others uninformed personae such as yourself post them, the memes in turn can age exponentially...

It's a closed loop.

The act of measuring would alter it, anyway.

Gomez thinks meme is academic somehow. (it is, but not in his little OMGLOL way).

also Gomez is always rude and angry because he is a very rare breed of asian.

FAT.

Now that Josh has posted a years old internet joke that I first saw on rec.humor.funny back in the 1990s perhaps we can get Charles Mudede to smoke a bunch of dope and then write a really long and incomprehensible slog piece on what it all means that includes pictures of whatever hot woman he's currently wanking over. That would be perfect.
