I think it was the SHITTY ASS FOOD THEY SERVED!!!!! Not the smoking ban.

haha, it wasnt a viable business without smoking? that speaks volumes to the actual quality of their food and drink.

how is the hurricane doing?

Well, that's one. If it's true, of course, which I kinda doubt. Minnie's failed on Broadway long before the smoking ban went into effect.

Agree with #1. I remember eating there about 7 or 8 years ago and the food was actually decent. Went there a couple of times the past year and stopped going there completely because of the quality of the food.

Man, remember when the smoking ban killed the Minnie's on Broadway?

What does the smoking ban have against Minnie's? And when will the police do something about this before it strikes again?

They have... Oh, excuse me... HAD the WORST after hours (or any hour)food I've ever tasted and their "full of their hipster selves" waitstaff SUCKED (and by sucked I mean not in the good way)!!!

minnie's was there forever. wasn't the old one in the broadway market? upstairs? or am i thinking something else? anyways, during college it was a great place for a late-night snack. i just assumed it would always be there.

The smoking ban went into effect nearly 2 years ago. Did it really take Minnie's that long to close their doors after losing their smoking customers?

The day that Minnies on Broadway closed down marks the beginning of the end of Capitol Hill as we knew it.

Is it just me or have all the late night places closed because they sucked? Seriously, did their food all start to get bad at some point? I remember when I like Denny's and Minnies and in Spokane I loved Perkins. Is it just growing older and the food just stopped being appealing or did the actual quality turn to shit at some point in the past decade?

@7 - there was a Minnie's on Bway where Galerias is now. But the Belltown location was there first.

I'm not surprised it's closing - I've been wondering for the last 5 years how it managed to stay open. I don't think the smoking ban killed it - I just think the young hipsters it has always served has moved on.

I *loved* Minnie's when I first moved here in '91. It was where I went when I had extra money (heh). I still miss the tomato basil soup of the Bway Minnie's at 4am.

It wasn't the smoking ban, it was the fact that everyone I know has gotten food poisoning at least once from eating at Minnie's.

I ate lunch there yesterday. I had grilled cheese and the tomato-basil soup, of course, and now I'm glad I did! There was no indication that they were closing - we remarked that it looked cleaner than usual, that was all.

I didn't go there often (I prefer the Hurricane for my 24-hour needs), and the service was generally terrible (the non-soup food can be hit-or-miss), but I'm sad to see it go. The first time I went was on a date in high school. I thought the boy who brought me there was the coolest.

Minnie's was home to the worst food in the entire city of Seattle. I'm not a smoker, but I'd rather smoke 12 packs of menthols before I had to eat another bit of their gruel. Twas the food not the cigs.

ya know, it wasn't the best food, but it was pretty good after stumbling home drunk from belltown or pioneer square.

@4 - I agree. Food used to be pretty good there, especially breakfast. It turned shitty the past few years.

The entire wait staff being tweaked out didn't exactly add to the late-night ambiance either.

Also hot off the 2+ year old rumor mill: Minnie's was sold to new owners a few (4-6?) months before the smoking ban. Shortly thereafter, these new owners came to their new business one day to find their employees all smoking pot (out back or maybe in the walk-in refrigerator, I forget) and fired them all on the spot. And then these new owners apparently couldn't run their business or hire people who could run the business for them.

Rumors via ex-Minnie's employees who were fired for pot smoking who all walked into my work at the time for "we just got fired - ha ha" drinks.

Not as controversial when compared to other businesses that are sold to new owners and then fail.

I will miss how pretty it was to see straight through both sets of windows while driving by (since there were no people inside to obstruct the view)...

And:
Drunken drive-through beats greasy spoon at 2am. That's where all the business went.

Really, though, their business failed because it's hard to make money as a restaurant, and harder when the food is greasy-spoon fare at $9 a plate. Most 24 hour restaurants still in existence in this city make their money from selling the booze in their bar, not from the greasy food they sling. That's why Denny's closed - did you ever hang out in those bars? Me neither.

Thus, Seattle culture was struck a thundering, trivial, almost imperceptible blow.

As best I can determine, the only laudible thing Minnie's ever did was play De La Soul during lunch hour. I ate there a handful of times, but the last straw was when a friend of mine ordered the "corn pancakes" thinking he would receive your traditional johnny cakes and instead got normal pancakes with GRAYISH CANNED CORN slopped on top. Vile.

Agree with all the comments that the food and service (never great) went seriously downhill over the last 3 years. I used to go there all the time when I was working late downtown in the mid 90s.

Every time I've been to Minnies in the past 2 years though has resulted in bad food and even worse service.

I have really fond memories of late-night diner food from growing up on the east coast - it's too bad that it doesn't seem the west coast can replicate that experience.

It's been said before, but blaming this on the smoking ban is ridiculous (like 90% of the statements made on this blog).

I used to eat at Minnies a lot. I never smoked, but I liked the scones and sourdough pancakes.

The first problem was the wait staff was nearly always horrible. The service was just laughable.

The second problem was the food. Most of the time the scones were like hockey pucks and the food took forever to get to you. Even when the place was empty, which was a lot, it took a long time to get there.

The third problem was cleanliness. I don't know how many times I sat down to a sticky table, but it was a lot. There was also the time my girlfriend tried to use the bathroom, and it smelled so bad she threw up from it.

Minnies was a great dive for a time, but you can only survive with 'one of a few 24 hour places in Seattle' being your only selling point for so long.

Still, I'll miss it, and I wish I'd known so I could go in for a farewell.

I went there once, never to return. The reason (and would all the other breakfast places out there please take note): carpet! Why the hell any breakfast place have carpet?? It just ends up as greasy and gross as the food they serve.

I lived in Belltown for almost five years and that place always looked dead, not just within the past year. I find it sad that a business relies more on it's patrons being able to smoke than offering a decent product.

Yeah, what everyone else said about the service. I loved it when they 22 year old hipster waitress sat me and my boyfriend (both well over 30, but not yet 40) directly under the blaring speaker, even though there were other clean tables. Presumably not being able to talk to each other over our meal was punishment for the sin of being "old".

Used to go there often, when it first opened. Then, must be almost two decades ago, one of the staff spilled ketchup all over my girlfriend's chartruse jacket. They offered to pay the cleaning bill. Fair's fair - right. We had it cleaned. Came out to around ten bucks at the time. They refused to pay. Seriously. A whole bunch of times. So I never went back. And I dine out at nearly every meal. Now I'm sure the ownership and management have changed a half-dozen times since then. But the new owners bought the bad karma of the prior ones, for sure.

I have fond memories of eating at Minnie's, but most of those were from 11 years ago. I loved the tomato basil soup, though, and tried to duplicate it at home. I never asked about the recipe, but after several years of experimenting, I think I came pretty close. Here ya go:

Tomato Basil Soup

4 14oz cans of Diced Tomatos
1 onion, Diced
1 Green Bell Pepper, Diced
2 or 3 Stalks of Celery, Chopped
6 cloves of Garlic (I Like Garlic)
1 Cup White Wine (Your choice. I use whatever is on sale.)
1 cup Half and Half
1 Bunch of Fresh Basil, remove the stems

Olive Oil
Black Pepper
Grated Parmesan Cheese

In a Large pot, saute the Onion and Garlic in about a tablespoon of olive oil for a couple minutes. Add the Celery and Green Pepper, and cook until the onion is translucent. Add the tomatoes, half of the basil, freshly ground black pepper to taste, and the wine and simmer for 20 minutes or so. Put about half of the vegetable from the soup into a blender, along with the cup of half and half, and blend until smooth. Add the blended vegetables back into the pot, along with the remainder of the basil and return to a simmer.

Serve in a bowl with a generous pinch of the grated parmesan cheese.

Serves about 6

Only 15 percent of the population of Washington smokes, and only 12 percent of Seattleites. Minnie's shut down because of a loss in revenue - something that is going to happen to a lot of restaurants because of this economic downturn. The smoking ban was two years ago and most restaurants saw an upsurge in revenue. Get your facts straight. We are going to see a lot more restaurants go out of business due to higher wages and higher food costs. OH, and Minnie's food did suck and those bathrooms, sheesh!
No loss there.

@37: You are a lifesaver. Minnie's had great tomato-basil soup, and was the first place I saw that used croissant halves for their French toast. The Broadway location (according to the husband) was great because none of the waitstaff knew how to mix a drink, so 95% of the drinks were pretty much just glasses of straight liquor.

This news makes me feel old.

I agree with previous posts from people who believe the smoking ban had little to do with Minnie's closure. That area has changed drastically in the past 10 years. Minnie's is surrounded by upscale condos now. That are was once young, artistic, struggling, late night, and hip. Now the area is young, 12-hour working day, affluent, early evening - and when it does go out, it goes to a place where a bowl of chili is $25.

Infestation by Streptococcus pyogenes causes strep.

Unless you waited tables with a mouth full of other people's spent cigarette butts, it is unlikely that what you describe was an actual strep infection. Doing so, however, would make you eminently qualified to work at Minnie's.

I live in the UK and we have only had the ban since July this year, but already scores of traditional British pubs have closed, and a statement on yesterday's news, said that beer sales in pubs were down over 60% while beer sales from supermarkets and other stores were up, about 30% I think, I cannot remember exact percentage. On AOL they reported this, and received so many posts, nearlly all against the ban, that they had to take the article off their site. I have also noticed that none of the papers have reported it at all this morning. Government cover up maybe?

This riddiculous ban, based on false scientific information, is killing our pubs, our restaurants, our cafes, and socialising in general. It is even turning friends against friends.

I haven't read all the posts on here, but from the few which I have read, there seems to be an awful lot of you who seem almost happy at this poor person loosing their business. Why?

PeterT @60 -
People are laughing about Minnie's closing because the food and service were shit. It had nothing to do with the smoking ban.

Frankly, I approve of the smoking ban. You can call it false scientific information (whatever that means), but I know for a fact that I smelled like a chimney and got headaches every time I went out to see a band play or to have a few beers. I also know for a fact that is no longer the case.

I also disagree with those who equate a smoking ban with prohibition. Prohibition would be if cigarettes were outlawed. All the ban does is protect those of us who don't smoke from being forced to inhale the fumes every time we go out in public.

I lived a block from Minnie's for the 5 years. Service was the absolute worse. Gave it one last try about a year ago. After an excessive wait for not so good food, we couldn't get our bill. Finally walked out after throwing a ten on the table. Did that cover the tab? No idea. Minnie’s shutting down had nothing to do with the smoking ban.

Mahtli69, you say that you smelled like a chimney every time you went out to watch a band and have a few beers? My grandfather gets just the same through watching too much TV. Age related maybe?

You also say that you smelled like a chimney? I've never smelt a tobacco leaf burning which smelt anything like chimneys. Tobacco smells sweet and cool, whilst chimneys smell of burning coal or wood. Are you sure you are using the right fuel on your fire?

Would you call for a ban on everything that you didn't like the smell of? How would you like it if you went into a restaurant, and the guy next to you wanted you thrown out because you were eating something garlic flavoured?

When they passed the smoking ban in Idaho (which did not apply to bars, btw), a few greasy spoon breakfast places became "private clubs" to get around the smoking ban. I think they charged like $5 for a membership. Not sure how that worked out for them. Probably not well...

PeterT - you're using bad logic. If i was in a diner or cafe and garlic bothered me that bad I would asked to be reseated away from someone eating garlic. Problem solved! If I go to a bar and there is smoking I can't escape it - the smoke saturates the entire place. I quit going to shows and bars for a while because I knew I'd get some kind of sinus infection after every event because of the smoke. It's simple - you have a right to smoke but you don't have the right to make me smoke right along with you in a public place.

JohnT fails to recognize that

a. the U.S. is not the U.K in regards to % of smokers being different
b. the U.S. is not the U.K. in regards to pervasence of pubs/bars etc.
c. the U.S. is not the U.K. period.

while a smoking ban may work here, it might not in the U.K. our laws shouldnt be your laws if they dont work. so far they have worked in the United States without the hyped up loss of business crap.

Lee, how ould you feel about going to a BBQ, where real smoke was pouring out, or how about a birthday party where candles were burning, or maybe an Indian restaurant where jodd sticks were burning? I could go on and on, the truth is that you have a bee in your bonnett about smoking cigarettes, nothing more.
P.S. I don't smoke, but I have lots of friends who do and I am tollerant of them, as everyone should be.

Posted by PeterT | November 21, 2007 11:50 AM

@71 - Non-smokers should be tolerant of smokers? It should be the other way around.

Cigarette smoke, first and second hands, is toxic and causes an incredible range of health problems. The smoking ban doesn't take away anyone's right to smoke, it just asks that they respect the health and well being of everyone else by taking it outside.

Also, despite the unfortunate experiences in the U.K., smoking bans aren't bad for business. Eli Sanders wrote a good article about this a few years back: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=18698

@66 - PeterT, it has nothing to do with the smell. It has everything to do with the health effects of being around smoke.

Come on, it isn't 1970 anymore. The shit in smoke is well documented.

I am also tolerant of anyone who smokes. I don't think cigarettes, or any other drug, should be illegal. I only ask that smokers don't force me to smoke right along with them.

To all of you out there who do not know the true facts regarding second hand smoke, please have a look at this link http://www.davehitt.com/facts/who.html

The whole case for banning smoking is based upon lies, propagated by the big pharmaceutical companies. If anyone wants to see more proof, I can supply you with lots of links.

Big business, run by big pharma is damaging our way of life and our health. Wake up and smell the tobacco!

76 - Fuck your study. When I'm exposed to cigarette smoke, I feel like shit. End of story.

And, I don't even have asthma. For anyone with asthma, which is very prevalent today (particularly in urban areas), it's 100 times worse.

#57, you're joking, right?

Smoke inflames the moucosal linings of the throat, and bacteria then have an easier time infecting-get it?

I got sore throats every time I worked in the smoking section-and got strep if I worked the section over many days.

So, while exposure to a smoker may or may not increase actual exposure to the bacterium (actually-smokers oftentimes DO carry more strep in their throats), it will increase the other variable, inflammation of the throat.

But what do I know? I'm just a waitress.

In response to the person who asked:
"Does anyone know what this means?
"unnecessary persons not excluded from establishment""
Correct me if I'm wrong, but since that particular line was in with the bathroom facilities, I think it means they would let any random bum off the street use the bathroom (to shoot up/throw up etc)
And yes to all who said the food was shit and the service was worse -- I have NEVER gotten worse service anywhere -- I went about three times, the first time the waitress was on E and kept fondling my hair and coat and giggling, and completely fucked up my order, and the second time my waiter was literally twitching (and not in a 'valid-medical-issues' kind of way, in a 'crack' kind of way) and ALSO completely fucked up my order. I don't miss Minnie's at all -- I'll take the Hurricane or IHOP any day.
