Slog - Comments on And this is just the Beginning

So, like a totally scientific survey today has Chicago beating Seattle out in the category of most-caffeinated American city. Hence, a week from Sunday when the Bears face off against the Seahawks in a re-scheduled-out-of-prime-time because-the-Bears-suck game, prepare to lose. Sure, Seattle is the city that drinks the most coffee, but it's energy drinks and chocolate that win football games. Or so I seem to recall. And has any Savage mentioned lately that Chicago has a kick-ass public transportation system (for the time being. . . )? Seattle just keeps losing in so many ways.

Of course Chicago has a kickass public transportation system; the groundwork for it was laid at the turn of the 20th century, a time when local government could and routinely did decide to tear up your house next week and cover it with tracks, and no one said a word about it.

In a time when we have years of debate and wankery and four ballot initiatives before failing to build a monorail, that has a certain appeal.

Hopefully I can find a televised curling event to sate my Sunday sporting event needs, because that would be much more interesting than watching either of those two terrible football clubs bump into each other and fall down for 2 hours.

Chicago has better coffee too if you are looking for brewed rather than squeezed and lattéd. There is nothing quite like a full french press pot of single estate coffee to brace oneself against Chicago's wretched weather and bitchy queens.
Shouldn't bears be thinking about hibernating this time of year Shouldn't seahawks be thinking of migrating?

TSM:

Chicago government didn't create the elevated system--most of the system in use in the city today was formed from private rail systems.

My last house in Chicago before I moved to NYC was across the street from the Metra, and the Brown Line (or the Kimball Line, if you're an old Savage or something) was a half block west of that. Chicago itself is a hybrid of smaller towns that were gobbled up.
