Amy Pulls a Britney!

posted by on November 2 at 12:54 PM

Amy Winehouse and her backup drugs somehow summoned the wherewithal to perform at the “European Music Awards” or whatever last night. (Who knew Europe even HAD music? Or awards? Or that many drugs, for Christ’s sake? I ask you.)

Make of her appearance what you will:

Although linguists and various other “ists” have yet to pinpoint exactly what language Miss Winehouse is apparently singing in (right now they are leaning toward “Sheep”), the almost complete lack of obvious blood leakage from any part of her body was a tremendous relief. For everyone.

Bravo!

I love her for some reason. I feel so dirty saying that. Must be all of the drugs I'm doing.

the fact that she's still alive is more impressive than britney spear's entire career.

Don't feel dirty, Mr. Poe. I love her too. And I'm worried for her.

She did way better than Britney, as she at least slurred her words in tune, and integrated the intoxication into the mood of the song. What impresses me is the power of both Britney and Amy to surround themselves with more sober talented musicians and dancers who's names we never learn. What becomes of the backup band?

There's no way those are words, they're just sounds.

First, Adrian(!) Thank you for posting again. And b, I thought you were exaggerating her performance. Then I clicked 'play'. Good Lord, Woman, enough of being a drug mule! Don't you know what happens when the balloons pop up in you?

At least she tried to sing. I love how she kept the tune but totally lost the words - isn't the brain cool!

as much as I love Back to Black, I would NEVER buy tickets to see her live. Between canceling show and clips like THIS (especially around 1:25):

um... no. H

I wish she hadn't become such an emaciated druggie.

I love it when she hits her face on the microphone when the lights come on...

Love those classy nose-rubs.

And good for her for not using a single recognizable consonant.

Am I the only one who didn't even know there was an Amy Winehouse before this post?

I thought she was great!

Who is she?

you are all missing it - she is insanely talented - so it doesn't sound like norah jones - YAHOO!!!! - think billy holiday and try not to look at the backup singers jumping around totally out of sync with her live performance - this is not ashley simpson of SNL lip-sync fame - this is an artist -

[killjoy alert]

It's a REALLY BAD fucking addiction when one would choose/necessitate getting high/drunk before really important moments like this.

I've never really thought about how one actually forms words before. Is it a visual thing or an auditory thing, or something else entirely? Whatever the rest of us do, I wonder what's going through her head as she meanders her way through that song. Most miraculous at all, given how totally trashed she appears, is that she was able to deliver even a semblance of a performance. What does it say about me that this is the first time I have gotten seriously curious about what drugs do with our minds?

Walker expresses the mysterious point of view I encountered EVERYWHERE in the UK,e even from people who should know better -- that Amy W. is "talented" and "soulful" and "has a good voice". I don't understand it. I think she's an embarrassment to singing. I'd rather listen to Ashlee, to be honest. She's anti-funky and anti-soulful. She's FUCKING TERRIBLE.

The drug casualty, domestic-violence business is ridiculous, of course, but it's the enthusiasm for her total lack of taste or ability that mystifies me.

@4...

The Dap-Kings backed her up on her album. A wise choice for this young girl. They are certainly fine without her as any of their releases with the *WONDERFUL* Sharon Jones can attest to...check it out.

None of those videos work anymore. Try this site:

Amy has invented her own language. Soon the whole world will sing with their tongues pressed to the roof of their mouths.

I've never knowingly heard Amy Winehouse before, so I was surprised to find that she's actually OK. Unlike so many other comparable singers she ACTUALLY sings (rather than lip sync while doing a strip tease). Yeah, she does sound a little wasted.
