That's a great page on the history of soccer balls. I don't know where @17 got "dodecahedron". The panels are now various swoopy shapes (the English FA uses a different ball than the World Cup), but before that, even though the bonded shapes were hexagons, the printed pattern was not.

The whole thing is ironic.

"Women of the New World," has ominous overtones (think new world order), but it is also subtly sarcastic -- despite the diversity of ethnicities shown here, the women are ALL THE SAME. These women are not individuals, they are duplicates. A bunch of bikini'd and be-socked bodies with different heads, New World Barbies, sexualized for easy consumption. Their differences have been flattened, the way TV flattens out meaning, flattens out our perception of the world. They have been colonized by western technology, and by western ways of viewing women, of viewing the other.

Now look at the lines quoted: "I'll ruin everything you are" -- not just the women, but the countries they represent. They are being culturally flattened. "I'll give you television, I'll give you eyes of blue" -- Western culture, disseminated through the global economy, will create a world in its own image. And then, "I'll give you men who want to rule the world." Enough said.

This post isn't about Mudede salivating over women's bodies (although the picture does produce a conflicted response). It's about patriarchy and colonialization. Very thought-provoking stuff.

It's too bad nobody seemed to get it.

Yup, #25 got it right. The panel shape (before that bizarre 2006 ball) was a Buckyball, or truncated icosahedron.

And hey, I'm a sucker for pretty girls and sparkly things, too. If Mudede didn't take a moment to admire these women's bodies, his blood ain't red. But there's way more going on here. He's no slouch.
