That's a great page on the history of soccer balls. I don't know where @17 got "dodecahedron". The panels are now various swoopy shapes (the English FA uses a different ball than the World Cup), but before that, even though the bonded shapes were hexagons, the printed pattern was not.
"Women of the New World," has ominous overtones (think new world order), but it is also subtly sarcastic -- despite the diversity of ethnicities shown here, the women are ALL THE SAME. These women are not individuals, they are duplicates. A bunch of bikini'd and be-socked bodies with different heads, New World Barbies, sexualized for easy consumption. Their differences have been flattened, the way TV flattens out meaning, flattens out our perception of the world. They have been colonized by western technology, and by western ways of viewing women, of viewing the other.
Now look at the lines quoted: "I'll ruin everything you are" -- not just the women, but the countries they represent. They are being culturally flattened. "I'll give you television, I'll give you eyes of blue" -- Western culture, disseminated through the global economy, will create a world in its own image. And then, "I'll give you men who want to rule the world." Enough said.
This post isn't about Mudede salivating over women's bodies (although the picture does produce a conflicted response). It's about patriarchy and colonialization. Very thought-provoking stuff.
Greg -- yeah, I kinda gathered that from the messages here! I guess that's the "conflicted response" I was talking about.
And hey, I'm a sucker for pretty girls and sparkly things, too. If Mudede didn't take a moment to admire these women's bodies, his blood ain't red. But there's way more going on here. He's no slouch.

Mmmmm, thats my flavor!
I look at the slog and see no mention of Blade Runner playing at the Cinerama tonight, and think, "Charles Mudede is not a man."
OH BABY, JUST YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!!!
Over time, you come off as vaguely pervy Mudede
Vaguely? Over time?
There is nothing about Mudede's posts that aren'tovertly pervy.
Horse dick and universal tummies. Rock!
@2:
Aw crap, and I've already made plans for this evening.
Any word on whether this cut will get a DVD release?
I don't get it. Sure they're cute, but they all look like the chicks who do the laundry over at the country club.
ROWR
Mmm, an Asian invasion!
@8 dvd release?
December 18, 2007
That was nice.
Yes, lovely.
The hexagonal-paneled ball hasn't been used in real football for decades, but it still has symbolic uses, I guess.
Really #14?
What style do they use now
My question is, how do Charles and ECB even manage to breathe the same air, let alone occupy the same office.
@ 15:
dodecahedron-panelled.
the chinese are going to put the nail in the coffin of the planet.
@16 - because Charles is polite and very nice in person.
@17
"dodecahedron-panelled"?
WTF! I can't find any examples of this. If you get time do you think you could show me? Sounds cool.

How can anyone say this is pervy when it's accompanied by that quote??? You utterly missed the point.

omfg Chuck, the only thing that exceeds your creepy lecherousness is your laziness. Does the Stranger actually PAY you??
Dodecahedron - that's just crazy talk! It's really more like a truncated icosahedron---sheesh!!
Irena, what is the point? Maybe I'm tired and it's Friday, but I don't get the caption.
WHY don't they eat something. It's scary. I worry about their malnutrition.
@26 see China Girl. David Bowie. Great song (shudder, can't believe I just said that...I HATE Bowie. But still).

Ahhhhhhhhh. Thanks.
Are those really Chinese women? Poor resolution, but they look more Malay or Indonesian.
Big Sven @26,
The whole thing is ironic.

It's too bad nobody seemed to get it.
@31: Irena, I don't know if you are aware of this, but men can't think and look at breasts at the same time.
Yup, #25 got it right. The panel shape (before that bizarre 2006 ball) was a Buckyball, or truncated icosahedron.
