That whole thing straddles a very difficult line. The point made in the text is very pro-gay and does make a good point. But people are laughing because the kids are such flaming homos, and homos are funny. Careful, careful, SNL.

But, MBI, some kids *are* flaming homos. And they're the ones parents have issues with, are embarrassed by, etc. So... you couldn't make the point SNL is making here if you showed the under-the-radar gay kids. And speaking as a homo that was a bit of a sissy as a child, I think it's hilarious.

My hobby in grade school? Baking.

You took the thoughts right out of my head, MBI. I assume the laughs aren't canned, it being SN LIVE, so I guess the show isn't responsible for the fact that the audience laughed at the effeminate boys more than at the homophobic parental reactions - the ostensible point of the skit's text. I have the same problem with bigot-vague shows like South Park: the program is such that viewers can laugh at or with the bigots. On the other hand, with a show like All in the Family, it was clear that the laugh was on Archie Bunker.

Thanks for bringing my attention to this video. I have a twin brother who is a Skoal dipping staunch Republican. He constantly worries about one of our nephews being gay. It's a big deal for him apparently because I am gay and he's super sensitive about it. I put that video on my blog because he needs to see it too! ;) Thanks, Dan. I wrote you about 5 years ago about relationship advice. You helped me focus better on the bigger picture! Thanks.

Brett @ 21: I hear you. I have a brother-in-law who won't let his (5 year old) son come to play with his cousin (our 6 year old son) because we're gay. He won't even let the two boys hug--they're supposed to shake hands. What a moron. Thank god he lives on the east side. We put up with him, but I think he's headed for a heart attack if he doesn't get some Homocil: the other day his boy told him to get rid of the uptight wife (my sister-in-law) so the boy could have two cool dads like his cousin. I told my husband we're going to have to fund a bus pass for the boy cuz he'll be in Seattle every weekend escaping his family.
