John Roberts did some legal work for gay rights in the mid 90s (possibly Romer vs. Evans, not sure since Wikipedia was no help) but that doesn't mean he'll be any friend of gay rights that gets argued before the Supreme Court. but legal representation does not equal support for the group or its positions. otherwise the ACLU would live up to the Right's picture of it as NAMBLA loving.

Of course legal representation equal support to some degree. Are we to assume that lawyers cannot refuse to represent someone who requests them? You can rightly argue that he does not necessarily endorse their position, but he should certainly have to answer for his support. The Westboro Baptist Church should not be tolerated or humored, and his representation of them does both without question.

Or, it would be anyway, if they were such huge assholes in the mid '80s as they are now, which I can't necessarily find evidence for.

The Phelps are a weird family, weirder than you might think in that while insanely homophobic, their law firm actually handles many regular law cases. In fact Fred Phelps used to be known as a civil rights attorney and their firm still handles a fair number of discrimination cases (not Fred, he was disbarred).

I believe a lot of the really insane stuff like picketing has come in the past 20 years, if Thompson dealt with them in the mid-80s they were weird, but not batshit-insane like today.
