Watchmen on the Walls, In Their Own Words

posted by on October 14 at 12:27 PM

Jim Burroway, editor of the Box Turtle Bulletin, sent me his overview of the Watchmen on the Walls, the international anti-gay group who’ll bring their Taliban-esque mission to the Lynnwood Convention Center for a three-day conference next weekend.

Previous Slog coverage of the impending conference can be found here and here. Today I bring you a collection of quotes from the Watchmen’s August conference in Novosibirsk, courtesy of the aforementioned Jim Burroway:

Said Scott Lively, author of The Pink Swastika, a widely reviled book of Holocaust revisionism that blames the rize of Nazi Germany on homosexuality:

“There is a war that is going on in the world. There is a war that is waging across the entire face of the globe. It’s been waging in the United States for decades, and it’s been waging in Europe for decades. It’s a war between Christians and homosexuals. All across the West, the sexual revolution changed the culture of the nations. The sexual revolution embraces the idea that there should be no limits on sexual conduct. And this is the design of the Devil to destroy civilization, because civilization is based on the natural family. One man and one woman united in marriage bringing children into the world and training them to replace them in the next generation. That’s the foundation of civilization and the heart of Christian living.

And in the United States where the sexual revolution began, it was the homosexual political movement that designed this strategy to attack Christianity. The homosexual movement teaches sexual freedom, and its first target is the heterosexual people. The homosexual activists stayed hidden but they taught this philosophy through their activists. And out of the philosophy came the principalities and powers that is destroying the West: The pornography industry, the abortion industry, and the destruction of marriage through divorce. These things are the product of a way of thinking. They deny the Truth of God. They deny the design of God for human beings. And their purpose is the change the cultures of the world.

Now, the homosexual movement has been winning this war in the United States, and it has been winning this war in Europe. And we’re looking at the future collapse of Western civilization. And Watchmen on the Walls is an organization to fight against this collapse. Watchmen On the Walls is an organization of men and women with courage, who will stand on the Truth of God and without compromise demand that the culture will follow the guidance of God. That marriage and family must be held at the highest level.”

Said Vlad Kusakin, host of a Russian-language anti-gay radio show in Sacramento and the publisher of a Russian-language newspaper in Seattle:

If we allow the people who hate God to take control of all the centers of power, then they will change all of the rules and they will put barriers in the way of the Gospel. They will prevent us from telling the truth to the people around us. But if the people of God can step forward and take control of the centers of power, then we can make the rules work in favor of the Gospel. We can use the government to help us tell the message of Jesus Christ. And we must do this!

Both Lively and Kusakin will be featured speakers at the Watchmen conference next weekend in Lynnwood, along with the Northwest’s preeminent anti-gay warrior Ken Hutcherson. As the Stranger’s public intern discovered, officials at the Lynnwood Convention Center thought they were renting their facilities to an entirely different organization called Watchmen on the Walls, a seemingly sweet and non-violent group of Christians that support Israel.

That’s not who they’re getting. Instead, they’re hosting a group that has announced a mission as dangerous to democracy and human rights as the Taliban’s. Stay tuned.

God DAMN that is some nasty bullshit coming out of that man. Yeah, the West is collapsing, that's why Latvia and all other sensible countries are desperate to join it, and why Russia is such a toilet.

Why doesn't the non-violent group of Christians that support Israel (Original Watchmen on the Walls) sue Ken Hutcherson's butt off for trademark infringement or something?

Intolerance is a handy refuge for these beasts. Look to our Republican Toe-tappers for more of the same.

How worrisome is this? Typically, these fringe elements have a lot of bark, but not much bite.

The Watchmen rhetoric has filled me an anger and disgust I'm finding it really hard to shake, and it's too early for a drink. (If anti-gay hatred drives us to substance abuse, the terrorists have won.)

Deep breaths....

Raindrop @4,

Uh, if you read the previous links, you'd see that followers of the Watchers beat a gay man to death in Sacramento.

So I'd say they have a bit of bite. And, yes, this is worrisome.

It is one thing to argue against our rights. It is entirely another thing to advocate violence against us.

Those are some motherfuckers, aren't they? So who's going to organize the protests? (And will the antiwar and antiglobalization types keep out of it, or agree to stay on message?)

David, take heart. They're right about one thing:

"the homosexual movement has been winning this war in the United States, and it has been winning this war in Europe"

...and it will continue to win this war, despite the lunatic ravings of these dinosaurs. A massive cultural shift is taking place, and this is just a spasm, albeit an ugly one, in reaction to the inevitability of that shift.

That said, I do hope a protest is being organized. What about the pride groups in your universities? I'd expect a lot of students would come out for this.

Scary shit, yo. These people are nuts. And people who are nuts do nutso things--like shoot up gay bars and bash people walking down the street. I keep telling myself this stuff is the last gasp of desperate people as we march to a better future. . .

Off to make a Manhattan. . .

This group is scary and I would love to join Mr. Poe in shooting any of them.
Then if he would help me shoot the Minute Men we could have great old time!

This was probably already said but why can't the convention center cancel and say No to this group? It sounds like the group misrepresented who they were and for that reason alone they should be able to get out of it shouldn't they?
I'm not even in the States so it's not an event that is in my face but it just sickens me to know there are people who have made this their theme in life.

Uh... Evangelical Christian Zionism is among the most viciously homophobic, racist, and socially regressive sect/movements in American Christian history.

Stupid fucking ex-communists are looking for someone to blame for the shitty state of their lives here in the "promised land"

By and large, they're too lazy to work an honest day's work, and too racist to function in normal society. Probably too stupid to learn English as well.

WHO. IS. GOING. TO. ORGANIZE. THE. PROTEST!?!

I would, but a straight white man from the 'burbs, I lack both moral authority and membership in any organization that might be a natural nucleating site for a protest (other than the ACLU, I mean.)

Sven, I am officially granting you the moral authority to protest. As Dan has pointed out regularly in the past, the war against gays is just the first battle in the war against straights. Just think of those unfortunate Alabamians that are legally denied sex toy stores.

@16, I am all for protesting this weekend and hell I have a four day weekend starting on Thursday. If anyone wants to do anything shoot me an e-mail at wag_1971@yahoo.com. I am totally willing to help out and I have time coming up.

@11, and we have learned in Seattle, gays have enough problems going out to our bars without dealing with our local drunk homophobes who have clubs right next to ours (so much for the "integration" of Cap. Hill)

But next weekend I would be VERY reluctant to go out alone since some of those freaks I am sure will find their way to some of the straight clubs on Cap Hill. And that just can not make for a nice peaceful weekend.

PROTEST PEOPLE!! I'M GAME!!!!

@12: I don't think trying to deny them a forum really works in our favor. Rather, allowing Watchmen on the Walls to air their putrid ideas can actually help discredit them. Remember what happened when Columbia gave a forum to Mr. No-homosexuals-in-Iran.

What we need to do is focus public attention on this gathering, picket and protest the conference, loudly denounce these theocracy-advocating, hate-spewing 'religious' facists, and show them that we have no use for their message. That show of direct opposition has more meaning than an attempt to prevent them from speaking at all.

These people are indeed very dangerous. As the poster above noted, followers recently murdered a gay man in Sacramento.

Do not forget the attack and stabbing there in Seattle of a gay man outside a bar on Capitol Hill. The Stranger covered it. Same thing: Eastern European evangelicals attacking a gay man.

a public confrontation/protest is the wrong move, the kind of thing these neanderthals are looking for/can understand. that's so yesterday, anyway. widdle away at this crap indoors, on other levels; bureaucracy, cyber, phone calls, legal. prove how much smarter you are. any moron can wave a placard and chant a slogan. sheesh. and this is the last gasp of a losing faction, so take the long view instead of a drink.

@23
I disagree. A protest is the right thing to do. It doesn't have to be loud or done with the idea that these bastards can be shouted down. Those that oppose their ideas need to stand, even in silence, to show this kind of thought can not be allowed to go unanswered. It would be very effective to have a thousand or more people do nothing more than be there. Don't need signs or bullhorns. Phone calls and blogs are fine but will never be as powerful as facing these zealots.

I disagree. With regards to the long view, public protest shows backbone and conviction which administrative gambits lack. Trying to silence your opponent makes it look like you cannot counter his arguments face-to-face. It's a weak ploy and is the historical favorite of oppressive majorities. You do not want your cause to be conflated with that kind of history.

@#23, you are wrong wrong wrong wrong.... Face to face peaceful protest is not only apporpriate but DEMANDED of the gay community. We MUST face them in a public forum such as this to let them know we will not take this laying down.

Seriously though. Public intern. Organize a protest. Isn't this your job?

Some kind of protest is definitely in order. On one of the previous incarnations of this topic on slog though there was a post that stated "If ever there was a time for a pink bus full of drag queens to show up" or something like that. Well, that really would be about the worst thing that could happen. Not that there is anything wrong with that pink bus or those drag queens, but this would be making a point that we're like everyone else, with legitimacy and credibility. Any kind of protest shouldn't be about spectacle or camp. It should be about showing how we are a next door neighbor, a same sex couple with child down the street, that first year associate in your firm, the guy/girl who you walk up to at the teller window in the bank, the person who cuts your hair, etc.... This is about really saying "We are just like everyone else." Daisy dukes, construction boots, big cotton colored candy wigs would just give them more ammunition and on tv just how credible does that stuff really make the gay community at large appear. Get this protest going, but try and round up the local chapter of PFLAG (remember they're the types of people being threatened by this group too), get some of the softball teams to go, maybe Orca, etc.... Hell, get those Feather Boa Fathers to even go with their kids. Put the real face on this protest if it is to happen and really shame these creeps.

while at my brother's this weekend i was perusing his copy of "left behind" it seems relevant all over again as an insight into this group. these watchman may be small but those who buy into the message are many. fight it here, fight it now.

ok, I'm confused. It seems like here they're saying that gays are the reason for the abortion industry and divorce. I can't think of another group of people that has fewer divorces and abortions. The only way to keep everyone from getting divorced is to not let them get married in the first place.

"And out of the philosophy came the principalities and powers that is destroying the West: The pornography industry, the abortion industry, and the destruction of marriage through divorce."

Some days I really miss the Cold War. The good old USSR kept all those religious whack-jobs very neatly oppressed. Now they are free and look waht they do with it. Some folks just don't deserve the nicer things of life.

the problem is that people who hate gays use what they think it is that gays do to rationalize hating them. The problem is that they hate a small minority of people who are biologically different. These people are cowards and pussys who pick on the smallest minority of people. Nature will never create a large number of us gays because obviously nature promotes reproduction. But for whatever reason, some people like me and others are born to be biologically gay. Some people say that people choose to be gay. But why would anybody do that. I mean I have to watch my back when I leave my house and watch what I say and what I do all of the time. BAsically, some people hate gays because they see us as a regular person who chooses to do certain things rather than as a biologically different being. To me it is really simple, a creature that is hated to the point that it is not even seen as having a right to live has two choices. He can either exist or not exist. The question you have ask is do you want to exist or not? If you don't want to exist then keep on having stupid corny parades and trying to convince straights to like you. If you want to exist...do what you have to do to stay alive even if that means putting your attacker in an ambulance.

that nigga ken hutcherson is exactly what the problem is. that stupid fat nigga has more love for the Russians than he does for gay black men. That greasy nigga has people in his church choir who are obviously gay but he ignores that and pretends they are not. A lot of these dumb nigga pastors do that in every church. The black community uses gays when they need them and then demeans them. Its like all of those rap niggas like DMX and a lot of others call us faggot on their albums but they have gay men behind the scenes at their record lable who do a lot of work for them. But these niggas don't even appreciate them. They use them and then get on their album and call them faggots. These pussy niggas like hutcherson and all of the others don't mean shit to me. I mean if Ken hutcherson hates me for something that is in my biology then I can do the same to him. I hate all fat niggas who pray to that ugly shit Jesus. I hope you read this slog nigga. We hate you.

We are planning on protesting Friday and Sunday.

Here is the Schedule I got from the Lynnwood Convention Center
The Watchmen will be there Friday 6pm to 10pm
Saturday 11am to 9:30PM and Sunday 6Pm to 10pm.

I plan on wearing a Pink Triangle on as an armband. We want a peaceful stand on this to show our community this is not acceptable and we are bigger then them. Please pass this info on to as many as you can.

Take care,
Matt
