Slog - Comments on Values Voters Summit

Guiliani and McCain were bitch slapped at this weekend's Values Voters Summit. Via TPM: 1. Mitt Romney ... 27.62 % 2. Mike Huckabee ... 27.10 % 3. Ron Paul ... 14.98% 4. Fred Thompson ... 9.77 % 5. Sam Brownback ... 5.14 % 6. Duncan Hunter ... 2.42 % 7. Tom Tancredo ... 2.30 % 8. Rudy Giuliani ... 1.85 % 9. John McCain ... 1.40 % The religious right clearly hates Giuliani--but they hate McCain a little bit more. So it looks like sucking up to George W. Bush, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, et all, has gotten John McCain...

McCain alienated them by admitting he likes ABBA. When asked whats on his ipod McCain replied:

“Dare I say ABBA. Everybody says, ‘Ehhh, ABBA.’ Why is that? ABBA was the largest selling (recording act ever). Nobody likes them but they sold more records than anybody in the history of the world, including the Beatles. But everybody hates them. (But) you’re a no-class guy if you like ABBA. Why does everybody go see ‘Mamma Mia?’ Hypocrisy! Rank hypocrisy! I’m not embarassed to say I like ABBA, ‘Dancing Queen.’”

What's Ron Paul doing with higher ratings than Sam Brownback and Fred Thompson? As a libertarian he doesn't think the government should interfere with a woman's right to get an abortion. He also opposes the Iraq war and Idiot Boy's domestic spying program. I saw his disciples at Hempfest saying he supports the right of people to smoke pot if they want. So there you have it: a pro-choice, anti-war pothead sympathizer getting more votes from the psychovangelicals than candidates who have had their heads up Jerry Falwell's ass from the beginning. Doesn't mean Ron Paul will ever get my vote, but it does seem like whatever planet Republicans live on is becoming more like Bizarro-World every day.

10 and 11: My apologies, you're right about Ron Paul and abortion. I was looking at his website where he goes on and on about people having choices in matters related to health care. Naturally I assumed that included a woman's right to choose (why have I not in almost three decades as a registered US voter learned never to take a Republican's statements at face value?) I should have looked at other sources including the footnotes in Wikipedia (my source of last resort) which clearly said he thinks states should set their own policies on the matter. Meaning, of course, that the handful of states that allowed abortion rights before Roe vs Wade in 1973 would be the only places where this option is available. Live in the red states, you're screwed (in another of so many ways). So I regret my error. Gotta be more sober before posting on the Slog!

Of course I still find it odd that the religious right preferred Paul over candidates that more aggressively courted these people. The exceptions, of course, are Mike Who? and Mitt Romney. President Mitt Romney--there's a scary thought. I think I should take a pill and lie down...

For all of you - stop the glib stuff on Romney. Stop now, he is a real danger.

It is not about his church, sorry to tell you all the Mormon bashing is stupid, it is his politics.

He has NO scandal baggage. Great wife, five sons, as telegenic as JFK. Self made many millions aire, we like self made wealth.

The far right would rather have a Baptist - but - when it comes to Romney or Hillary, they will forget all that.

He has built an excellent operation, and is in the top two or three everywhere. Rudy G. freaks the far right and many R's in general. He should, his Mafia ties have yet to be public, but NYC politics are filled with that stuff.

My take on Romney vs. Clinton. Hillary has a lot of baggage, all the old stuff and much new, I bet.

Search as they might, Mitt is as clean cut as a boy scout. When the race goes to mud, and Rove and company will do the most negative campaign ever seen on Clinton, well good luck - clean as snow white Mitt might be looking better and better.

Beware, and by the way, only the really silly call Mormons a cult. They are in this era a more than full service church, big time operation all over in in the west. All churches are filled with their own hocus pocus, really, who cares.

It is politics, right wing vs. progressive, not whose religion one is joining.

Yes, yes. The Mormons are a full-service church. But my progressive great-aunt out in AZ HATES the Mormons, and I've never heard her say a bad work about anyone. And hate is not too strong a word to use. My friend (he's 30) was taught in Sunday school in a somewhat progressive denomination that Mormonism was and is a cult. His parents (in their 60s) still believe it wholeheartedly. I can't believe their the only ones who believe so. While I certainly understand that the religious right's moral compass only points towards power, I don't think it's impossible to completely write off the Mormon thing.

Sure he (apparently) doesn't have scandal baggage outside of tying his dog to the roof of the car on family vacations and flip-flopping on virtually ever major position he's ever taken depending on the political winds, but I tend to think that the flip-flopping is pretty huge and will be for many folks.

All in all I just wish liberals would stop being so damned jumpy (Rove is everywhere; he's going to sink us!!!) and start leading already. I've been invoved in Dem politics for almost a decade and I'm pretty close to checking out.

Mormonism is a cult because that's what Republican voters think. Dems will tear his flipflopping to bits in the general election.

More interesting to me is the rejection of McCain. He's the most "Reaganesque" of the bunch. But all those xians see red because he ripped on Falwell.

The funny thing is that Ronnie Raygun himself had an ambivilent relationship with xianity- he was not a regular churchgoer, and his wife was into astrology. But like all R power players he was happy to tak their votes on false promises of overturning roe v wade and a new Victorianism (see "What's the matter with Kansas?" for more info.)

He just had the smarts to keep his mouth shut on how he really felt, unlike Mr. Hothead "fuck you I know more about immigration than anyone in the room" McCain.

Wonder if the Rs rejection of MCain at some deep level is because he's soooo gun ho about the war- maybe at some level they know that's absurd?

The fundies in the Republican Party will ultimately not have a problem with Mormonism. Neither will the non-fundies. Romney is the only candidate who is (a) acceptably Republican (b) acceptably religious and (c) not a lightweight. Thompson is a joke, Huckabee is an airbag senator, and Giuliani is an idiot and an ethical nightmare. Ron Paul is Ross Perot. Ergo, Mitt wins.

And if the Dems put up Hillary, I think Mitt can beat her next year, even in this climate.

Consider this: Mitt is the only viable R candidate who wouldn't prompt a religious third-party candidate to siphon off 20% of the vote.
