After reading the Freakonomics chapter on how violent crime associated with the cocaine trade was closely correlated to high street prices for the drug that last one doesn't seem like such a great thing to be bragging about.

Basically, people are only willing to risk getting shot for a very high profit. So if interdiction efforts have really succeeded in raising the price, one would expect to see a similar spike in violent crime.

Woo-hoo. Another glorious victory in the Drug War.

While I favor legalization (and taxation) of pot, I have ZERO sympathy for big growers, particularly those asshats who use public lands.

The story says marijuana has become Washington state's 4th cash crop, just behind potatoes. Help our farmers, have doobies and chips tonight.
