The more I learn about this group, the more creeped-out and disgusted I become. Especially this Scott Lively guy and his "Pink Swastika" nonsense. I don't know about the rest of my fellow sloggers, but in my mind, that sort of mean-spirited revisionism is on par with Holocaust denial, which is both appalling and has absolutely no place in our society.

It appears no one is willing to get a protest going. I read about a woman in the north end (see Everett Herald article from today) trying to get something going but there was no contact info or time/date given. I just got a response from a e-mail I sent to the PI the other day asking if anyone is going to protest. I'm sure the press will show (given the article in the Times today, Postman blog in the Times last week, front page articles in the Herald today and Saturday) if they think there will be protests. We don't need to be confrontational...just show up in opposition. So, even though I have never tried to organize a protest, I'm going to try now. Saturday at 9am at the Lynnwood Convention Center. Its just west of I-5 off 196th. Drop me an e-mail and let me know if you will/can be there. Can we really allow this event to happen without showing our resolve? nimrodwa@hotmail.com

i just heard third-hand that some local radio station said that the convention center is no longer hosting the event. I have been unable to confirm online. perhaps you super-slueths at The Stranger can follow up and let us know!

"You're going to have extremists on any aspects on any teaching..." Thanks Fred. You're also going to have people who encourage extremism in their congregations who then turn around and say "Extremism's going to happen anyway."

Hypocrite asshole.

Joe Fuiten's equivocations about speaking at the event are priceless. What an asswhipe.

FIXED-GEAR BIKES!

A ton of people will chime in now.

9:00am, on a Saturday? Jeez, that's a serious sleep-in morning. Can I protest if I'm still hung over and half asleep?

I'll be there.

jamesb, it seems people aren't upset enough to want to protest en masse.

perhaps it's too late notice. perhaps it's in lynnwoord. perhaps we are too complacent because they've not become a big enough problem yet.

Hey guys, it looks like the Watchmen conference overlaps with the Digital Photo Expo - both will be going on at the convention center on Saturday. Check out the event list:

Anti-gay fundies + protesters + lots of digital cameras = win.

Protesting a group like this is pretty much a waist of time. I would no sooner protest these guys than I would Fred Phelps. My "Jesus loves me just the way I am" poster isn't going to change their minds at all.

Wasn't it russian evangelicals that used broken bottles to slice up that guy at gay pride last year? I wonder if there was a connection between them and this group.

@15

I swear to God I will fly out to picket Fred's funeral. So naturally, I like the idea of heading to Lynnwood. But not on a Saturday morning @ 9:00AM. Jesus. I need an accountabilibuddy to help me with that.

You know how those extreme pacifists are ruining everything. They're right up there with those dudes who just keep on smoking weed until they become violent and out of control.

Hutch, you old card. You're too much sometimes.

If this rhetoric about "the gay conspiracy that drove nazism" catches fire then you guys are playing right into some stupid issue derailing rhetoric. Who gives a fuck if every single one of those dudes in the Reich were gay? It's (a ludicrous, meritless wacko issue) peripheral to the issue of gay rights and you're getting off topic. Please be smarter than that. Demand your rights and let the dummies continue to marginalize themselves from normal people with desperate stupidity like this argument.

It's a dumb as countering that "Radical Christian Fundies From Eastern Europe Are An Immigration Problem".

Well.so far three e-mails and one on here...its a start. Sorry about the hour Mr. Poe. I wanted to be hiking Saturday but this is probably more important. You can show up drunk as long as you don't throw shit at anyone.
Monkey, we are not going to confront, just be there to show our distaste for this kind of crap. I totally understand its pointless to argue with these guys (I used to tend bar and learned fairly quickly its not productive to argue with the "know it all" drunk at the end of the bar no matter how wrong they are) but to allow them to go unanswered....I think we owe it to ourselves to do better.
By the way, the afternoon guys on KIRO radio are going to get into this at 4pm.

@ #18 - I'd be more than happy to wake you up at 9am Saturday morning, Mr. Poe. What method would you prefer; a gentle nudge or the smell of coffee and bacon?

There is a possibility of a planned "counter-event" elsewhere in Lynnwood this weekend that would be sponsored by LGBT community groups and progressive faith communities.

The goal would be to "counter" the hate with an opportunity for interested community members to have an educational experience about the real lives of LGBT people and not the ridiculous nonsense being spread by The Watchmen.

Stay tuned...

While I would certainly understand if the family of the gay man murdered in Sacramento wanted nothing to do with this, have any of them expressed a notion to stop this group?

It doesn't have to involve the family, but there's GOT to be some sort of communication with those outraged in Sacramento/Bay Area regarding this! Have any of you contacted people down there? The murder, as upsetting as it is, will be the crux of a successful protest of this event, as far as letting the otherwise indifferent pay attention.

#27 - Greg, any details will be much appreciated - I can fill my car with friends and be at any event which steals their media and give good messages. Some of them have done a lot of activist work. Smart, savvy, will not be stupid agitators.

More details, please.

There has been some contact with people down in Sacramento; they are struggling with these people on several levels- at LGBT events like their pride, dealing with the government (protests at the legislature, etc) and a general sense of fear and intimidation in the community.

The whole point of this is to not let them intimidate the community- and that is their goal. While Hutch claims there is no violence coming from him per se, he intentionally incites people by claiming this is a war, etc. It's that sort of preaching that stirs some of the fringe elements up and then you get things like what happened to Micah Painter, and the murder down in Sacramento.

People in Sacramento have suffered as have we. The point of all this is to make sure in a proactive positive way we say that we won't be scared of these people in our community. We won't give them or let them take that power.

the reason that hutcherson only talks shit to the non-black gay community and not to any gay black men is that he is a pussy and knows that any gay black man will bust that fat nigga in his jaw till he eats through a straw. We don't need to protest or parade or any of that. now he's hanging with a bunch of pussy russians. Nobody gives a fuck about that fat nigga who couldn't even play football. He mad because he is inadequate and was a shitty ball player. That nigga better keep talking shit to people who he knows won't fight back. he talks shit to any gay black man and that nigga will get his card pulled.

You have a great sens of humor and irony. BUT, I bet there is a working link between this group of crazies and Concerned Women of America.

Erica, David, what about it? Someone who is good at research, Dave Coffman.

They really are two sides of the same coin. And for all you people who don't understand the anger about Concerned Women and the Burgess link, think a bit more.

Remember these crazy Euro immigrants and their local friends are to quote Burgess, "people of faith", and deserve some special outreach programs to help us win elections.

Yuk. And more yuk. Or, just puke.

Actually my sense of irony and humor was more directed at those that seem to see a big difference between a Tim Burgess and Watchmen on the Walls. Now suddenly everyone us up in arms over this group yet they seem to miss the connection with what Burgess was doing a mere 2 years ago. I suppose there is a political future for Hutch in Seattle in 2009 as long as you oppose rebuilding the viaduct and support those silly bike lanes.
