The View From Here

Central Park—that’s what I see when I look up from my keyboard. Most of it, anyway. It’s nearly 80 degrees here in New York City. Muggy as hell, too. In other weather news, it looks like the snow is coming to the Cascades. Which is good news indeed.

Yes! We're only six weeks or so from snowboarding season!

NYC is great and all, but I don't understand its constant fetishization around here. Does anyone actually appreciate Seattle for Seattle's sake, or is there a belief that Seattle carries some mysterious potential to turn into a mini-NYC, or what?

I suppose it could trace back to the original landing and naming of Alki, carried along the collective consciousness.

We've had a little of everything today. Sun, heavy rain, wind, sprinkles, beautiful views. I kinda dig this time of year in Seattle.

Meanwhile NYC is still muggy as shit.

Imagine that, Seattle.

These are nice reminders that New York is a part of our experience of Seattle. As when whitey first arrived. Our Alki was called New York at first, then changed to its present name, meaning "by and by." Dan's messages on the internets have brought us the by-and-by today. And that's enough weed for one afternoon.

Yeah, I don't get the New York thing either. One of my friends from high school went to NYU and while that particular area of the city, Greenwich Village, is nice, the rest of it is just so over-populated, filthy, polluted and yikes expensive. The people there are uh, let's say direct, and an apartment you're not afraid to walk out of is $3,000 a month.

Another friend was regularly woken in the middle of the night by these hookers screaming for their pimp, Chico, to give them their money. (Sometimes for fun I walk around and scream "CHHEEEECOOOO!").

So, it's a fun place to visit for a few days, but etc...

Import the directness, energy, and honesty please. Leave the rest.

Jesus, how much are you paying for that view, Dan? You could stay on my couch, and have much better parks nearby, for at least half that.

You know, when you live in the world's butt crack, the arm pit looks mighty nice.

New York is a damned interesting place to visit, but living there makes you nuts. On the other hand Seattle is a dull place to visit, and living there makes you want to jump off a bridge.

Hey Complainers! Give me a break! New York City can be a very magical and amazing place...to live in even! Yes, Seattle can be magical and amazing too...blah blah blah. Just because NYC is like the center of the universe and no one pays attention to Seattle doesn't mean that you need to whine to Dan while he is on his trip! Can't a man enjoy another city? I think you are all afraid he's going to leave you for the big apple. Sheesh! It's okay, daddy will be back home later kids...no need to cry. Let's go distract you with something else...look! It is a A Hello Kitty Shinto Shrine

Stay on my couch and you can see Central Park once you step out the front door (and dodge the horseshit).

If you don't have Sunday brunch plans, I heavily recommend Calle Ocho on Columbus and 81st. Excellent unlimited sangria, free warm bread basket with a mix of sweet and savory, and every entree under $15. Nice interior, decent service. I'm mystified as to why this place isn't mobbed at 11:30am every Sunday. (Though it is at night.)

I've lived all over, and there is nowhere like New York. NY is my hometown and is an all around great place- and by the way, is one pretty safe large city.

So enjoy NY, and next time try the food in the boroughs-it kicks ass.

Stupid TV!

Do not get Colbert Report. I do not have cable for good reasons, Artist , work at home, do not need TV distraction. If it is there with many channels I will watch it.

Great job on Colbert Dan! It was nice to see all you - not just the head shot. You're keeping yourself up well being married and having children....

Want to trade views?

I'll trade my 80 degrees of dry heat for your 80 degrees of muggy heat just to visit NY :)

Dan you were brilliant as usual on Colbert. Jon Stewart should be proud his spin off show "Colbert Report" is doing so well. Observant Jews like Jon Stewart, and fellow media superstar Sacha Baron Cohen who keeps kosher and observes halaka, are great role models. We all need return to observing the law and honoring Torah. That you can be funny, brilliant, wealthy, and feed our Jewish Soul is a gift. Dan you've done so much for the community, and your journalism is just brillian. I see you on staff at the New York Times with a regular feature on John Stewarts show. You deserve it with your incredible talent.
