VICTORIA, B.C. — The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is worried about marijuana use by British Columbia ferry crew members, based on interviews after a fatal ferry sinking last year. Board spokesman John Cottreau said today there has been no suggestion that crew members were high when the Queen of the North slammed into an island and sank in March 2006, but investigators were told pot use was not uncommon between shifts, on board as well as off the vessel. The government's right to be concerned. This is exactly how Gilligan crashed that damn boat....

I think, and I'm sure every Canadian will agree, that you should not operate vehicles while stoned.

Just like you shouldn't operate vehicles while drunk.

Now, what you do off the job is your own look see. I should point out that ferry crew live aboard these ferries for many of the runs.

Interesting; we observed a few WSDOT ferry employees enjoying a bit of pot with a patron at her vehicle on a late night ferry to Lopez Island over Labor Day. I thought maybe that was one of the reasons the BC Ferries are so much better ... guess I'll have to find some other explanation.

Much will be said about this, and it's true they probably shouldn't be smoking pot while driving a ferry, but I strongly doubt that had anything to do with the crash. Unless the captain left the cockpit to go cook up some munchies.

Now the CEO wants all transport workers subjected to random drug testing. MOFO!
When I worked on the ferry nobody, I say nobody smoked pot on shift, nor came to work high. Not a big deal.

A Canadian friend and I recently took a B.C. ferry from Sydney to Galliano Island and I was pleasantly shocked to find it perfectly acceptable for us to sit on the hood of our 1979 Duster smoking a doobie whilst watching J pod frolic in the waters...it was AWESOME!!! This has nothing to do with stoner ferry operators, of course, but dang if that wasn't a tiny bit of paradise...
