The Collapsing Coalition: Once upon a time there were 50,000 non-US troops in Iraq. Soon there will be just 7000. Britain is cuttings its troop levels in half. Iceland--which was recently cited by George Bush as a member of the coalition in Iraq--just pulled out its one troop. No One Could Have Predicted: Nicaragua outlawed abortion and now Nicaraguan women are dying. Auto Works Strike at Chrysler: Nobody wants to buy their cars and now nobody wants to build them. Frederick of Hollywood: Thompson makes his first debate appearance. Underwhelms. Regrets: One of Jay Leno's writer has a few. Unclear...

Actually, the biggest event of the day may be the release of Radiohead's new album, In Rainbows. http://www.inrainbows.com/

In the midst of my first listen, I am happy to declare it "fucking awesome."

And besides the music, they're distributing it themselves, for whatever you want to pay. The future of music?

Radiohead dealt a good one to the record companies... they're gonna bleed.

And Leno -- I'm sure I don't need to point this out -- is the hackiest of the hacks.

I know this Folsom thing is about gays, fundies, the last supper etc, I think (not really following the story). Whenever I see "Folsom", I always think of a good oldie by Johnny Cash.

Last night I heard "Crescent City Blues" by Gordon Jenkins (from 'The Second Dream - The Conductor' Suite). Quite refreshing after hearing Johnny's stolen version for so long.

Once upon a time there were 50,000 non-US troops in Iraq.

Actually, the comparison that always blows my mind is that there were 250,000 non-US troops -- including 195,000 Arab troops -- in the first Gulf War. Total strength of the allied forces during that conflict was almost an even million.

Then we went back to invade and fielded a paltry 250,000. A million for a border action, a quarter of that for an invasion.

Ridiculous.

Oh! my god! Today's the Radiohead day, I forgot. So glad I'm at work with a shitty sound system.

With regards to the Molson/Coors merge, I think it's a fine move. The question now is whether Anheuser can stand up to their combined market power. Fortunately, Americans tend to be very brand-loyal when it comes to beer; the microbrew market's growing but still nowhere near the "Bud-lite twelve-pack in the fridge" norm. Should be interesting to watch what happens!

Every time they outlaw abortion, it always increases the number of women dying.

Interestingly, it doesn't actually change the abortion rate, it just means more dead women.

Thank you for posting the abortion article. It is a reminder for all of us in the US to stay vigilant and keep women's rights protected. It's ironic that "pro-life" in this case leads to the death of women, and often the death of the fetus as well.
