The Money Race, Della V. Burgess Edition

posted by on October 26 at 14:19 PM

Looks like City Council member David Della’s alleged threat to withhold support during contract negotiations didn’t deter the firefighters’ union from spending tens of thousands on Della’s opponent, Tim Burgess, after all. According to reports filed with the city’s Ethics and Elections Commission, the Seattle Fire Fighters Union has spent more than $23,000 on two mailers promoting Burgess. Added to the $273,000 in official contributions Burgess has raised (a total that includes $63,000 of his own money), that gives Burgess nearly $300,000—outpacing Della, whose $244,000 includes $10,000 of his own money, by $65,000.

Burgess = Good!
Della = Bad!

repeat.

The firefighters just want to play politics. If Burgess wins, does they get to keep playing?

Yeah, but the Burgess money came (indirectly) from Concerned Women for America.

That can't be good.

I like to think of this as the firefighters stamping out the flaming bag of dog shit that Della and his consultant Michael Grossman have been leaving on so many doorsteps across the city through their distortion-laden direct mail campaign. But that's just me...

@3 - Excuse me, but wasn't Burgess in the business of writing distortion-laden direct mail pieces for the Christo-fascists? Perhaps he doth protest too much?

I think it a lot but I don't say it often enough - Will is an idiot.

ah, touché Mike. Yes, given his work for CWA I would say Burgess has earned a lifelong stay in the penalty box when it comes to complaining about anyone else's propaganda.

Get rich on the sword, get kilt by it.

della wants a rebuild & he played the race card when most seattleites didn't even know he had a race.

he's gone baby gone.

@7 - The fact that white people have the luxury of ignoring racism doesn't mean that it's not an issue for people of color. I wouldn't say Della "played the race card," I'd say he made an observation about the main-stream enviro organizations that many POC make. Just ask your friends from POC communities, if you have any.

If the so-called "Surface/Transit" AWV option on the ballot it would have gotten its ass kicked even harder than the tunnel proposal did. Vote against Della for supporting a Rebuild if that's where your issue, but don't kid yourself that S/T is/was supported by a majority of voters.

Got Della's mailer today and thought it was pretty effective despite the fact that being negative is not productive.

@8 - Della implied a large block of the voting public is racist because they don't agree with him on the issues they care about.

Should the voters give him a pass on that because of their white-luxury?

Perhaps the Pacific-American community should give Della a pass on his incompetence because he "looks like them."

The monolithic People of Color congress deserve better than Della.

He insults them and us by running the race he's running.

Voted for Della - I think the leopard has not changed spots and Burgess makes me puke.

Now that they found copies of the hate mail he is admitting to the Times and PI, yes I wrote a lot of them.

Yes, I know the pussies of the world don't like a hard fought campaign, shit.
Burgess worked for hate mongers, fact. Della did not invent that as a campaign slogan. Oh you pussies.

Puke.

David Della takes money from Bush Ranger Suzie Burke.

Puke.

Some of the posters here have failed to take note the every progressive in the city worthy of that label has endorsed Della. I don't mean nice Kerry Democrats.

And, almost every leader of note in the Black and Asian communities.

And, the conservation groups are very focused on their thing to the exclusion of any social issues. They are very quiet when it comes to racism and homophobia. Too quiet for many progressives, and people of color.

Just how much of his fortune will Burgess invest to buy this seat? Not very Seattle values for the rich guy to buy on to the council.

I would burn my ballot before voting for Burgess.

@11 - Della didn't say the voters were racist, he said that Burgess got the endorsement of the mainstream enviro groups because he looks like their Board members (i.e. a rich white guy). If you feel personally attacked by that, maybe you should ask yourself why?

#13
In a non partisan race, Susie's money is green, and they all take it.

Seattle is a small town and I suspect Susie who has been here a while, respects Della's activist work going back 25 years. His labor organizing for cannery workers, yes largely people of color, is legend. Almost got killed.

A lot off us respect that big time.

Do you know what you are willing to die for #13?

Just asking.

@16

Apparently I'm willing to die for a big ass Hard Hat Tool & Supply truck running up my ass in the sharrow lane on Stone Way.

Fuck Suzie Burke. And fuck ANYONE who takes money from her. Yes, that includes a lot of people in Seattle politics. Still, fuck 'em.

oh and thanks, watcher.

and you can ignore the majority of Seattle that voted down the Mayor's tunnel too ...

and it's not hard to beat Suzie if you know how, @17. Unlike most large scale property owners, you just have to know how to define the battlefield.

@15 - I wish I were a rich white board member.

I resent the statement not because of who I am, but because what I believe.

I resent Della's statement (and those like them) because it implies who you are is more important than what you do.

You're intentionally dishonest if you can't find the implied racism in his statement. You woefully short-sighted if you think I'm only talking about Della's anti- rich- white- guy racism charge. Politics built around identity always hurt those in the political minority.

Posted by DownWithDella | October 26, 2007 5:09 PM

But what is the "political minority" in Seattle?

Is it rich black people?

Poor white people?

Transvestites not living on the hill?

Let's define our terms first.

Posted by Will in Seattle | October 26, 2007 5:31 PM

@21 - My point exactly. The people in power will always define the terms to suit their needs.

I'm afraid in power in this case includes people who post comments to local blogs.

Given a choice between Burgess and Della, I'm writing in the Baby Sloth for that race.

And Richard Lee for the Velasquez/Harrell race.
