Maybe big daddy just wanted a little lovin'.
He should have hit her.
sad. just sad.
@ 1 & 2... could we have a just a little victim friendly humor please... just for the sake of balance?
Poe, you are sick and adorable.
Anyone who exploits these tragic events for any cause (other than those causes I support) is a heartless opportunist. I've been saying that all along and this is a perfect example. My heart goes out to all who are unable to capitalize on this terrible news.
To #4; being unfriendly to victims is one of the hallmarks of this newspaper.
Being sensitive to anyone is uncool unless the editors declare that sensitivity is called for. Otherwise anyone and any thing is fair game.
Poe, you are pathetic and predictable.
Comedy, folks. It's not pretty, but it's funny.
I declare that we should be sensitive about this.
The editors have spoken. Obey us.
I hear his wife wanted him to come clean on RTID/ST2 and oppose it but he refused.
Can we just have the morning news so I can get on with my day?
I declare, indeed.
Wow, the wife of a politician calling in a spousal abuse claim. He must have cheated on her.
But what about the VICTIM!
Did I miss the memo about Be An Asshole Day?
Szwaja and him will get along really well. They can trade stories about being the slammer for dv.
thats funny!
@10
Oh come the fuck on. Nothing happened. Nothing. He 'grabbed' her. Ooooh! Call the cops. If something did happen, okay, why did she call the cops? Why didn't she just knock him out with the frying pan that's always in her hand?
So we can crack jokes about suicide and death (in general) here on Slog, but when a man 'grabs' his wife for the first time in 33 years, we have to be sensitive or censored?
Meanwhile if she 'grabbed' him and he called the cops, we'd be having a laugh riot. You're a sexist, Dan. How does that feel?
Obey this:
,.|..
Oh, Mr Poe. We love you. All is forgiven. Sensitively,
Dan
Poe, you don't know what you are talking about, per the usual.
First of all, I have no idea what ,.|.. means.
Second of all, until this morning Richard McIver was my FAVORITE city council member. He seemed so personable! Another reminder not to trust politicians, ever. Or maybe the lesson is not to trust men? Or maybe the lesson is not to get married. Uhhh, too many lessons. This world is a sad place.
Was there a flying plate involved? If so, him and Szwaja should start a disc golf team.
@21: Ask Erica, I'm sure she has plenty of lessons you can take from this.
Will his resignation take effect before or after the sentencing? Polish up those resumes and practice your speeches for the appointment process. It will be an open and fair process, as long as applicants fit the "profile". Right?
33 years without incident and now this? I'm as feminist as the next person, but there are at least two parties involved in this. I imagine they've both been putting up with a lot of crap for a long time.
@19
I love you too, Dan.
@21
It's a middle finger. Flipping Dan off. What #23 said.
Odd day. Need coffee. Forgive my horrid attitude. Or don't. I like it.
@18: "Officers were dispatched to the home and determined there was evidence of a physical assault". One would assume that the officers would be cautious about arresting and jailing a city council member, i.e. that it would be for suspicion of more than just resting a hand on her shoulder.
mciver was drunk. time to go on the wagon, my friend. and resign.
i'd rank mciver as the 2nd to dumbest council member, slightly ahead of della, but dumber than jean godden & significantly dumber than steinbruck (although resigning over the viaduct was areally dumb move).
You'll note that McIver is not a Jew, which is why he got in such trouble. Mark Sidran was a Jew in Seattle city government, and he was never once arrested for domestic violence. It is always the goyim who are arrested for such things.
It must be a very stressful budget season. Greg Nickels & Tim Ceis probably sent Richard McIver over the edge.
When a spouse calls the police after 33 years, there's something there. Let's give the benefit of the doubt and assume that she did what she felt she had to do.
@ 28 is right. McIver is not the sharpest tool in the shed. He is also one of the most conservative members of the council. I realize that only Nixon could go to China, but why can't we elect a smart and progressive person of color on to the Council?
@27
So what? You need to use some force every now and then to show that you're the boss, and that someone is out of line. Sensitively,
Mr. Poe
P.S.
And like I said, why didn't she defend herself with the frying pan?
I make her pancakes, he gives her pancakes.
What's the deelio?
Not sure where that remark came from @29. A couple years back, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg got all ugly drunk, took a swing at his wife, and the authorities were summoned. DV is pretty much an equal opportunity offense.
@11 - good one.
Maybe he has early onset dementia ... it does happen.
McIver is an abusive loudmouth. Maybe his wife just had enough. Maybe the voters of Seattle will follow whenever he's up next.
McIver wasn't expected to run for re-election in two years and he appears to be an even better candidate for retirement now. I predict a John Manning vs. Joe Szwaja faceoff for the Council's DV seat.
Mr. Poe: Why don't you defend yourself with a frying pan when Andre the Giant zombie version grabs your throat? I'm pretty sure that would resolve any conflict you two had.
Unlike Marlaina, I don't carry a frying pan around with me everywhere I go. I would be toast.
I think the lesson I will actually take from this is not to like councilmembers just because they are timely in responding to my emails.
@35: I believe he's spoofing Issur, one of our regular trolls here who cops an Elders of Zion persona. Or maybe Issur just finally went off the deep end and forgot his screen name.
#41: Bingo. Look at their voting record instead.
Heard about this this morning. Is this the start of a movement to ANOTHER recall and appointment?
I'm not calling for a recall.
Last time I even mentioned that possibility about McIver, Ron Sims almost bit my head off.
@33,
With what frying pan? Unless you were there and can attest that she had access to one, just shut the fuck up.
@46
I was there, and can attest that she not only had access to one (duh, who doesn't have a fucking frying pan?), but she had it in her hand.
This is factual. You can go blow your nose now.
I don't understand. 33 yrs of marriage, he "grabbed her," she says it's the first time, and she wants to see him in jail? Seems a bit much.
@47,
You are a fucking idiot.
I think they were drunk and shit happens. No need for jail and all this other crazy talk. If a man can go 33 years w/out shaking his wife a time or two, I think he deserves an award! My grandparents used to pull guns on each other in the house. Cazy old fools. Nothing to see here folks. Move it along.
@49
Thanks.
