Slog - Comments on School Bored

I went to a school board candidate forum at Nathan Hale High School last night, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive David Blomstrom in the wild. He wasn't there—which was disappointing—and neither were school board incumbents Darlene Flynn and Sally Soriano, who were at a school board meeting. It was a pretty unimpressive event, and a bit awkward talking to the folks we didn't endorse. The blurst part? After the forum, one of the candidates shared a liiiiitle too much information with me: After repeatedly telling me how badly they had to pee, the candidate and I walked...

You should see if Educating Mom -- a PI blogger -- has some way of getting in touch with Blomstrom. She had him as a guest blogger a while ago. A bizarre discussion followed and continues months later:

About your endorsements...

You must have relegated the school board races to the 2nd string while Josh and Erica did the big stuff – else how does Sherry Carr go from being a brainy, pragmatic, white Democrat, someone Josh wished were running for city council and thought was "one of this year’s more impressive candidates in any of the races for any position" to “an overrated PTA mom”? Because of intelligent design? Hard to keep up with you crazy kids…

BTW, when you all grow up and maybe have families, you’ll figure out that it’s PTA moms who do all the work, and they suck it up to do it because they know it has to be done and no one else will. You’ll see.

You should probably stick to the races where you actually follow the politics and know the issues – or to the playground, Jonah. This makes more sense now…as does your Beavis-like joy (She said bladder!!...)

Wish I'd known you were at the forum - I would have loved to talk to you -

Who cares? They all suck, they will all continue to suck, and my student starts home schooling in four weeks, because there's no way his mom and I are putting up with Seattle's shitty public schools any longer.

Hey, political candidates, I guarantee that any one of you who promises to put Seattle Public Schools under municipal control will get my vote, even if your other stances include occasional cannibalism.

Gital wrote, "Hey, political candidates, I guarantee that any one of you who promises to put Seattle Public Schools under municipal control will get my vote, even if your other stances include occasional cannibalism."

Gee, that's simply brilliant. Greg Nickels loses or embezzles $1.1 billion on Sound Transit and brain-dead Seattleites punish him by electing him Mayor. Now they want to abolish school board elections so Mr. "Seattle Way" can work his magic on our schools, too.

You people are unbelievable.

But there may be intelligent life here in liberal Seattle after all. I like some of the things this guy has to say. He gets it...

Comment by Ed Advocate

Sally Soriano has been very specific in her concerns for Seattle Public Schools. As she states:

“Some of our major problems are: crowded classrooms, disproportionate and inequitable outcomes for many students of color and low income students, environmentally compromised schools, the serious consequences of the WASL exit exam, and inadequate state funding.”

Her opponent, an attorney, has not presented any perspective on these vital concerns. He apparently has no plan for combating disproportionality, the drain of the WASL on real teaching in the classroom, institutionalized racism, or the equitable use of resources to ensure quality education in every school.

Sally has been an important minority voice in most measures that directly impact these issues. She helped expose the fiscal mess that the previous board oversaw. She was directly involved in bringing us a professional educator as the new superintendent, terminating a failed business-oriented administration.

The board is still heavily weighted with attorneys, business people, and others who have little or no first hand experience with concerns of the educational community. Sally researches the issues and makes her decisions based on the results. Her critics say she "participated in a lawsuit against the district." She was a WITNESS, filing an affidavit, not a party in the suit. Let's stick with real issues.

Maier's claim to fame was heading up the levy campaigns, but in reality, he was just a hired salesman whose job was to convince people to accept the levy--from the way he talks, you'd think he wrote the darn thing.

Re-elect Sally Soriano to the Seattle school board for continued focus on quality education in our public schools for all students.
