seems like the satire was lost on some...

I went from annoyed to LOLing in about a paragraph.

How ironic that this is up on slog.

We saw that Saturday night and debated for quite some time about its legitimacy.

The anti-war left has become such a parody of itself that it can be hard to tell when it's being parodied.

Oh, also, we were really drunk, so that can also make spotting satire hard.

"The anti-war left has become such a parody of itself..."

Funny, cool, anti-anti war cynics, in all their self-absorption, coolness and disdain, seem to me such a paraody of THEMselves that I don't know if YOU are legitimate, Exelizabeth!

Because you know doing something counts even if does nothing and puppets don't make you look silly, no not at all.

The fact is the Left, so convinced of its rightness(the Truth shall set you free), it forgot you actually have to win. Faith is dumb whether its believing you'll win because "God is on side" or that ideological purity will result in anything but defeat.

But then false victimhood is rater endemic these days.

Well, those that are pro-War and Occupation and have been 1,000% WRONG about every single thing that's happened over the last five years have never ever once listened to those of us that have been 1,000,000% (or even more perhaps) CORRECT about the war and the ensuing clusterfuck/bloodbath, so I guess there's no reason for them to start listening to us now.

Surge away!

so nuance is suddenly a bad thing?

Some of you are seriously debating this poster?!? Holy fucking shit.

The poster is wonderful.

I'm confused. I read this and thought that is was the hardcore anti-war crowd (exempli gratia: Will in Seattle) lampooning those in the progressive community who are not doing everything they can to end the war ASAP and who retain the delusional hope of this thing ending as anything other than a complete clusterfuck (e.g.: me). Seemed reasonably funny in that light.

But it wasn't supposed to be a "parody" of the hard left, was it?

@13: That's what I got out of it too, so, yeah. Kinda confused about what some of the posters are going on about. *blink*

@13 I read it as a parody of the lefts constant fragmentation and our fetish for committees and meetings, but looking over it again I can see the point about it being a parody against those not ideologically pure enough.

I don't think it's attacking those "not ideologically pure enough" but instead attacking a view that we must gradually withdraw from Iraq. To insinuate that those who want an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq as crazy ass lefties who only want idealogical purity is rather insulting to Millions of Americans who agree with pulling the troops out now.

I think it is really easy to criticize some people in the anti-war movement for their ineffectiveness with you providing any alternative on how to end the war (unless you really want to see it continue).

Chris-

Extra bonus points for saying the poster doesn't attack those "not ideologically pure enough" and then proceeding to attack those who are not ideologically pure enough. Genius.

Those of you who are for getting out now, but have drawn a big "V" for victim on your head because not everyone agrees with you- stop fucking whining. A majority now agrees with you, and because the current administration is ignoring you and your friends, they are going to be crushed like narcs at a biker rally in next year's election. YOU HAVE CARRIED THE DAY. It sucks that Bush can't be compelled to stop this war without defunding the troops, but that's how the constitution's written and we all have to live with it through next fall.

Having said that you all are in the majority and have won the day, and having said that my beliefs that we might end this in anything other than a clusterfuck are "delusional", I still have to belief that we should try because I honestly belief that things will be a lot worse after we flee than they are now.

If I were President I would immediately meet with Iran, Syria and Saudi Arabia and tell them that we will federalize Iraq in the next 12 months, and do they want to be partners in this process or combatants. Hopefully they would help and not hinder. Then we make a Kurdish Iraq, a Sunni Iraq, and a Shiite Iraq. 12 months from now, we're 100% gone, and we've done so in the way that minimizes the net (Iraqi plus American) death toll.

"Crushed like narcs at a biker rally" is a fantastic is a fantastic simile.

The last time I went to an anti war protest, according to the line up of speakers they had arranged, apparently I had to a) hate Israel and support Palestine, b) support Fidel Casto (I am not making this up) and c) hate Democrats in order to be anti-war. So that was the last anti-war protest I will ever be going to.

I'm not anti-anti-war. I'm anti- counterproductive and alienating tactics.

Also, the right-wing is WAY worse than the left wing in terms of being able to tell if it's supposed to be satire or not, but sometimes you gotta poke fun at your own peeps.

We can't even be united on what this poster is about or whether it's funny. That's why it's funny.

For the record, I thought it was funny.

The real question I think is, is anyone going tonight? Where is the Yellow Dog Cafe, anyway? I'm assuming today is a 3rd Tuesday.

Uh Jude, it's the ninth... ;)

Posted by Giffy | October 9, 2007 12:41 PM

Well, Giffy, it says "every third Tuesday" not "every third Tuesday OF THE MONTH"; maybe that was to be presumed, but I thought it was another little example of incompetence - sort of like if it had said, "ever other Tuesday." Anyway, I probably should not spend any more time analyzing this poster.

lol, good point.

As a Jew I am against the war but for the occupation. I feel Israel is better of with American troups in the Middle East. I just hope we can convince America to invade Iran to "protect gay rights". It's as good an excuse as any, and if Americans bought the Iraq war to "save the women of Iraq", then why wouldn't invading Iran to "save gay rights" work? As long as Israel is stronger ten years from now with American airbases sorrounding Iran, then I don't care what excuse they use.
