Slog - Comments on Polling Washington

There haven't been many polls of Washington State on the presidential race because our caucuses come so late, but here's an interesting one: Two days ago Survey USA asked people in this state about all the head-to-head combinations you get using Obama, Clinton, and Edwards on one side, and Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney on the other side. Who does best against all comers in this state? Obama, it seems. He beats Giuliani by 11 points, Thompson by 14 points, and Romney by 22 points. And, he gets more support from Democrats than any other Democratic candidate in all those match-ups....

I think part of it may be that Washington is one of the least racist states. I think most people here aren't dealing with the fact he is black, we just like his fresh views on politics.

Although personally, I think even though Obama is extremely likeable, I tend to agree with Edwards more on the issues. For instance, both Edwards and Obama have good ideas for setting standards and goals for renewable energy and carbon emissions, but Edwards has a plan to sell emissions permits and use the money to create a $13 billion a year fund to reseach clean, renewable, efficient technologies. Obama has no such plan for what I can tell.

SurveyUSA? Isn't that the same group that polls for KING5 by using Random Digit Dialing and a recorded voice asking the questions? Probably the most unreliable polling methodology imaginable. I wouldn't give this polly much credibility at all. Next topic, please

Comment by Jenny Durkan, Washington State Chair Edwards for President

Hold it Eli -- Obama does NOT "do best against all comers" in this poll. Read those numbers again. John Edwards does better against Thompson and Romney than Obama or Clinton. This is consistent with poll after poll that shows Edwards as the candidate that is most likely to take the Whitehouse regardless of who the GOP pick. The only edge this poll shows for Obama is against Rudy G. And if you compare those numbers with other polls they do not add up. Survey USA regularly pegs our state wrong, so I do not put much stock in these numbers. But bottom line -- given all the positive press Obama has received here, I suspect his campaign would have expected him to do better than trail Edwards in 2 of the key match ups. Which just proves: Washington wants a candidate who stands for the right things and who can win.

@ Jenny Durkan: True, Edwards does have a slightly wider spread than Obama when he's matched up against Romney and Thompson (but just barely).

However, Edwards gets significantly less support than Obama from Democrats in those match-ups. What does that mean?

I'll update my post to clarify, though.

These results encourage me, actually! I have long warned of the dire, psycho anti-Hillary sentiment of the USA. The primaries don't mean shit- The democratic party wants Hill, so that's who we're getting. I predicted she'd win the primaries, lose in a presidential election, or win and get assassinated.
Well, this poll seems to indicate she can win the election, so half my worries are allayed. Now the only thing I have to worry about, assuming I'm right, is the consequences of her assassination. Will the veep veer hard right in response to the incident, or bring focus to the real biggest terrorist threat to America: Right wing Americans?
