Oh, Barneys

posted by on October 29 at 11:15 AM

There’s an election going on! But who takes those things seriously? Not the Seattle Barneys crowd, apparently.

If local Barneys shoppers were to hold up election-style signs about anything, this window display from 5th Avenue tells me, they’d do it wearing all black (gotta be civic process chic!) and one of their main concerns would whether to pick Helmut Lang over Roanik.

I actually like going into Barneys and looking at clothes I mostly can’t afford. But this insipid window display made me embarrassed to go in there over the weekend.

Vote for cheaper products at Barney's

Sorry that you can't afford to shop here, Eli.

XOXO,

Shopping is voting.

But, who doesn't need a $6,000 leather Prada coat that doesn't go with ANYTHING?

Barney's sucks ass. I couldn't find a t-shirt in that store for under $125. And they all sucked.

I hear they like to wear black.

That is so last century.

Excuse me while I go buy some hot coral pink suits.

Man, you had me worried until I Googled Helmut Lang. I thought for a second there that I was ignorant of some German chancellor recall election or something; not doing my part as a globally-aware Seattite; forgetting to read my Spiegel this morning over wild-caught lox, local organic flax seed bagels and fair-trade shade-grown coffee.

Fortunately it turns out I'm just ignorant of fashion. Carry on.

WHO WOULD PICK HELMUT LANG FOR ANYTHING EXCEPT TOTAL BOREDOM?

Poor princess,

maybe a trip to Target will put things back into perspective.

I saw that too and thought that it was a (probably unintentional) spot-on commentary on what politics has become.

Who needs the vote when you can buy a fancy coat?

Again, the mainstream media ignores candidates who break out of the traditional mold, like Roberto Cavalli*.

*Before anyone flames me, I'd like to state that I don't know shit about fashion and just picked a name.

JHC the pain one would have to go through to actually endure a conversation with a Barney's employee! The absolute banality of it all. "You know Jil Sander is just THE designer this year and you really must buy this terrific pair of trousers made from a blend of yak chin hair and the pubic hair of old peasant women from Kosovo! I'll put them on hold for you. Just ask for Ty when you come in." Barf! There isn't a salesperson at Barney's that would give anyone a quickie in a dressing room to make a buck.

@14: Nobody who would, or nobody who wouldn't give a quickie? This seems like a pretty important distinction.

I kinda like it, it looks like something middle school kids might think of, which makes me smile (re: not creepy advertising science/demographic stuff).

Besides, they're little attempt at whimsy shows that at least they're (or thanks to their display artist, are now) aware an election is taking place, which puts them ahead of... errr... 99.5% of other retail establishments. If the retail/commercial sector applied a fraction of the energy toward "voting season" that they do retail holidays (that goes for state legislatures and congress, as well), we might have higher participation numbers.

Disclaimer: I don't shop at Barney's.

@15 Sorry, "wouldn't" give a quickie to sell an over priced garment.

Barney's OUTLET, on the other hand, is fucking great.

I think it is retarded genius. Accidental or on purpose? Only the salesbots know for sure.

Actually, now I think of it, given the choice between Della and Burgess, Karl Lagerfeld seems much more palatable.

@21 I just envisioned Karl Lagerfeld rolling his eyes at Jean Godden during a city council meeting and then just fanning away at himself. Good thing I brought those adult diapers in to the office today!

Ditto re: Barneys Outlet. Picking up guys at their Warehouse Sales in Chelsea is easier than picking up bratwurst at the supermarket.

the manequins in that window have more on the ball than the city council, that's for sure.
