Official Protest Notice for Lynnwood Watchmen Conference

posted by on October 17 at 14:05 PM

Slog tipper Levi passed along the official announcement:

ANTI-HATE PROTEST RALLY ALERT

Yes, it is happening this weekend and NO they are NOT welcome in our community! Let’s let them know it! RAIN OR SHINE!!! LOUD and PROUD!!!

A peaceful protest is planned for this Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007. It is our goal to surround the Convention Center located at 3711 196 St. SW, Lynnwood, 98036 at 9:30 a.m. Their conference begins at 11:00 and we want to greet them as they arrive.

Please follow these simple rules:
DO NOT block sidewalks, intersections doorways or driveways.
DO NOT stoop to the their level of hatred. Try not to be offensive and DO NOT be physical with any conference attendee.
DO wear bright colors and draw attention to our cause
Children are welcome (so let’s set a good example for them)
Bring banners, signs, balloons, & any creative way to express your opinion
IF anyone has a sound system or bullhorn they can bring this would be terrific! Chanting would be awesome! Singing would be great! I’d love to see us all link arms in a full showing of unity and support of one another and pray that THEY replace their hatred with love and acceptance. No one is born a bigot, it is a choice that can be changed.

There will be no formal presentation. We simply want to gather as they enter so they can see a large showing of people from all walks of life, all ages, genders and sexual orientation telling them that Snohomish County is NO place for hate.

This conference has drawn wonderful news attention. There will be media present and plenty of show of force by the Lynnwood P.D. Let’s make it a turn out that is talked about for a long, long time!

Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that “Silence is Betrayal” and we must not ever turn our backs on prejudices. We must look it in the eye and say “YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE” Let’s remember and respect everyone’s right to free speech and to religious freedom, but let’s speak loud and proud and make it known that all people are loved in the eyes of the Great Spirit.

Thanks to protest organizer Cindy, who says she’ll be “wearing a rainbow tie-dyed sweatshirt with a large rainbow umbrella.”

Better late than never, I guess.

Also, fixed.

It's too late!

Man. Did they really send it out with a botched date?

I was planning on going in a suit. I like suits. Not rainbows. And there will be a special message for Alexey Ledyaev on my sign.

And it's me, Mr. Poe. So you know it will be tasteful.

Uh.... "Great Spirit"?!

They did indeed - got the wrong day, too (it's the 20th, not the 17th, which is today). Bummer.

Holy shit! I'll fix all the wrong stuff in the post, and send an email to the writer suggesting she resend the press release with correct info.

I can't make it - will someone please wield a "WATCH YOURSELF" sign in my stead?

Plus, October 17 last year wasn't a Saturday either! I think a homophobe sneaked onto their computer and screwed the whole thing up.

@7

That will be my backup sign for when people tell me to stop acting like a child.

I think they had 'auto-date' on in Word and just didn't notice that it did what it usually does when you start filling the current month out - give you today's date.

Of a previous year, Poe?

Great, this is already starting up to be a huge cluster fuck and not in a good way either.

Oh, yeah, the Saturday. Let's just say they're stupid. And forgiven. Because they did what none of us would do because we're lazy.

I'm sure the creepy homophobes will be terrified by the protestors. So, am I suggesting doing nothing? Actually, yeah, your protest will only legitimize what they already think of you. And more. That said, I think a gaggle of the more brutish fags should come armed and ready to bash heads. Wouldn't that be a great headline?

I hope they don't have a Rainbow Haters gathering today. Things could get ugly.

Sweet! Somebody who actually does press releases. Makes my Facebook event look pretty sad by comparison.

Fatalism is for chumps.

(thx Poe. Don't be afraid to flip the sign around if it gets ugly)

I want it to get ugly. I'm not going to lie. I see nothing wrong with attacking one of them. We're not going there to change minds, and everybody knows it. We're going there to show them we're here to stay, and there isn't a fucking thing they can do about it other than hold these shitty meetings.

The fags have had enough of you. It's on, bitches.

Good for you Schmader! Rules are very important. Feels like so many years (back in the Hands Off Washington days) since something REALLY worth protesting has come up. These are true haters in the most violent sense. I think the general public is pretty familar with the scenes from the violent Moscow Pride, etc. to know that they don't want that here. Protesting just for the sake of protesting is counterproductive and it makes the haters look like victims. Hopefully, Hutch has bitten off more than he expected. Doesn't realize it yet but hopefully the fallout makes even his followers start questioning things and it doesn't end up polorizing them even more. They'll be playing the "victim" card soon.

Kinda funny... that's the same night that HRC is having a big benefit.

I actually think a crossed-out swastika or crossed out "Taliban" would make for a great protest sign for this event, especially as an image-byte for a local news lead-in. I'm surprise I never see this.

Posted by Dougsf | October 17, 2007 2:32 PM

Make this a John Watersesque protest if possible. Start whistling at the attendees and yelling to see their hot cocks. When Hutch arrives someone should yell out in front of the tv cameras "Hey Hutch, remember me, we met in Volunteer Park summer and you blew me in that Dodge mini van?" Leer at them, make them uncomfortable. Bait them just a little bit, but in a comical way.

You know what would really show them? PUPPET THEATER!

Protest, but please leave your kids at home. They don't need to see see enraged people and hear their heated verbal exchanges. I find parents that use their kids in this way to be exploitive -- no matter what the cause is.

Gay kissing booth, anyone?

How about signs with some choice quotes from Hutch and some of the scarier WotW folks in big, block letters?

I'm going to put on my church badge and start a greeting line at the convention center front door. Can I get some trannies to dress up in their Sunday best and join me?

Mimes. We need mimes.

#14 - I agree. So let's trick 'em! - I say we dress like them, act like them, and get some brilliant HOW WAS IT? video footage... let them hang themselves with their own hateful ropes

My only advice, which appears to not be about to be followed, is to control the message. If you are seen on the news to be angry homos protesting against the nice Christian boys and girls, you're going to do these idiots a world of good. If people sitting at home hear more about "Nazism was a homosexual conspiracy" and "gayz must be exterminated to protect the purity of decency", then you look smarter for opposing them.

If I actually have to say it, I'm not going to attack anybody. Jesus.

But I'm not going to just sit back and take it if I'm attacked, either.

Immigration Office phone number: 206.553.6785 Call and get their butts up there to do a little meet and greet! Their fax number is: 206.553.2238 if they need any more information about this organization and where the conference is being held at.

You could Yes-man them. Dress as conservatives and act like bigots and idiots, to the point that average Americans are repulsed and repudiate conservatism.

I'm a homosexualist who will be protesting dressed as the biker guy from the Village People. Colors are great and all, but Costumes People!!! What could be better than than YMCA 24-7 during their conference? I mean, C is for Christian, right?

One tranny here for Greg. Will have church badge too, but not in Sunday best. Plan to follow the request and wear a rainbow tye dye dress.

Some really good suggestions (puppet theatre, mimes, trannies, etc.)! Looking forward to it!

As for me, I'll probably be moderately well-dressed (sorry, rainbow colors don't suit me well), and saying my favorite prayer for reduction of hate over and over again. Too bad I'm a polytheist in a queer religion, otherwise they might give a fuck (hurrah for being doubly damned--NOT!! As if any of these people have any idea about theology or religion at all, even their own...!)...but so what, I'll be there with my druid princess friend, and that's that!

Let me get this straight... a TOLERANCE rally where the "loud and clear" message was "YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE"? Only in Seattle would the hypocrisy of this approach be lost on the indigenous population. I'm sure you all were just shining examples of the "love and acceptance" you hoped the convention goers would embrace, right? Uh huh. Right.
