Obama’s Ex-Wife-Beater Problem

posted by on October 24 at 16:22 PM

Ex-gays aren’t the only questionable characters hanging around Obama lately.

The Huffington Post is reporting that Obama held a campaign event today surrounded by black supporters, including welterweight boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.. Mayweather, in case you haven’t heard of him (I hadn’t) has been arrested numerous times on assault and domestic violence charges. In 2002, he pleaded guilty to two counts of domestic violence. In 2004, he was convicted of battery for punching two women at a Las Vegas nightclub. In 2005, he was acquitted of domestic violence when his former girlfriend recanted her charges. He also was convicted of battery for a bar fight in Grand Rapids, MI.

(In fairness, I should point out that Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, Terry McAuliffe, attended an event in support of alleged model rapist Anand Jon—a fashion designer who is facing 32 charges of rape, sexual battery, and lewd acts on a child.)

The phrase "alleged model rapist" is dissonant, to say the least.

I can't believe I'm dfending HRC but I think the key word there is ALLEGED... Don't get me wrong if he did it lynch him. I'll get the rope but a canidate that understands innocent untill proven guilty should get more sympathy that some one who books bigots as entertainment

Dan, can you and Aravosis please ratchet down the guilt by association thing? I didn't hear you bitching about Mayweather when he was on Dancing With The Stars.

In other news, today John Edwards shook the hand of a guy who kicked a puppy! John Edwards: SOFT ON PUPPY-KICKING.

From the AP:

"He's simply a supporter. He's not on our steering committee. He's not an adviser to the campaign," Gilson said. "We know Floyd Mayweather from his philanthropy and his work with at-risk children in Las Vegas schools."

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's top adviser, said the fighter planned to attend the event but that he was not endorsing Obama's presidential bid or getting involved in politics. He said Mayweather is "a great fan who admires the senator's tremendous accomplishments."

Politicians associate with a lot of people in a lot of different circles. This doesn't make them close. Might calling this Obama's "ex-wife beater problem" not be stretching it just a little bit?

Jesus hung out with a lot of bad people too. Obama is like Jesus. What's wrong with that?

And Hillary too. Hillary is like lady Jesus.

I won't vote for anybody with one degree of separation from anybody who may or may not have done something awful!

Per @8 this is getting into some slippery territory. It seems difficult to manage who is in the same room with, or at the same event as a candidate. It is another thing however to determine who is speaking for a candidate and representing a candidate.

And as an aside to Terry McAuliffe: sure everyone is innocent before proven guilty, but damn, 32 counts? On its face that sounds pretty ugly and seems questionable why you'd be there...but there's always another side to the story.

He was acquitted of beating his girlfriend. How is he a wife beater? To be fair, you should include that Hillary is promoting her endorsement from a wife beater:
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/release/view/?id=230...

Hillary Clinton today received the endorsement of a trio of dynamic elected leaders from Southern Nevada communities -- Ricki Barlow, Councilman, City of Las Vegas; Dennis Keating, President, Nye County School District Board of Trustees; and Stephanie Smith, Councilwoman, City of North Las Vegas.

Barlow also has drawn criticism over a domestic violence arrest in 1998 for allegedly assaulting his wife, Vanessa Garbutt-Barlow. The couple has since divorced.

As part of a plea agreement, Barlow pleaded guilty, according to court records. The charge was later dismissed after Barlow completed impulse control treatment and community service.

Clearly being on city councils leads to DV - obviously it's a gateway crime to be elected to a CC.

Wow! @10 kinda creepy. The HRC campaign has already deleted the story from the website you linked to!

In other news, Erica C. Barnett has a drunk-driver and ex-wife-beater problem, as she has served on an election endorsement committee that has given thumbs-ups to both a drunk driver and a police officer with a record of domestic violence for city council.

Wow. See how easy that is?

What should a candidate do about his socially unacceptable supporters? Spray them with Lysol? Spit in their faces?

This is just a vast right wing conspiracy. I'm surprised people didn't blame this on Bush yet :)

I don't think McAuliffe is Clinton's campaign manager. He is an advisor. Mark Penn is the chief strategist.

And your smear strategy of "so-and-so attended a rally attended by a bad person" is really weak.

WTF, ECB! You have the reading-too-many-blogs syndrome. Your logic is flawed as all the other comments here have pointed out very nicely.

erica is just mad cuz he beat up de la hoya.

i dont know about this one, i agree that mayweather is a tool, the guy likes to beat the crap of his sparring partners til they bleed and then he laughs at them, but obama cant be held liable for who goes up tp the podium with him. im sure his campaign said, sir there is floyd he is popular lets bring him up. its lame to try to blame obama for that.very lame.

on the gospel singer homophobe point, the stranger is on target and like i posted earlier, a lot of black progressive leaders have come out critisizing his oportunistic move, but this is reaching.

@2...lynch? did you really just use that word in connection to the campaign of a black politician? the flap over this "anti-gay gospel singer" and now boxer has made me whole-heartedly a obama supporter. many lgbt bloggers have turned into shillary's that are attacking obama and fostering space on their blogs for racism that is then left unadressed by them. come on people step up to the plate! this biased reporting is very unflattering to ya'll.
