Maybe he shouldn't be asked to resign until, you know, something is proven in court?

Are you going to use this as the hook to hang a big feature story on domestic violence? It would be a rare chance to share some of your beliefs with your readers. It's sill of me to even ask, isn't it? You basically have write a screed about domestic violence now, right? It's like a the law of the proper journalist and stuff.

Fuck yes he should resign, at least from Sound Transit's board.

And what's up with these ST boardmembers? ST Vice Chair Mark Olson resigned a couple of weeks ago because of an "alleged" rape of a woman in his office after hours when he was all liquored up. He didn't wait to be convicted. Same with McIver - shoving his wife around after tee many martoonies.

They all are tortured inside. Sims was right to speak out against RTID. The rest of them know they should do the same thing.

ST has a board meeting today. They won't have a quorum to do anything. Just as well. There is less downside potential for the public if ST can't do anything because too many of them have legal troubles. . . .

I agree with #2, can we have the guy convicted in court before we jump to the G. Bush solution and assume he is guilty?

We are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty in court, NOT by a public opinion poll....

i think the most telling thing about this story is taht the wife stated that she regrets calling police and that everything she did was 'wrong' in terms of reporting the abuse and getting him arrested.

you couldn't write up a better definition of the classic 'abused spouse' syndrome than to see those types of words coming out of their mouths after their partner's have just been arrested for domestic violence.

then you gotta ask, how many times in the past has she been in the position where she should have called the police to get this guy off of her, but didn't. and then on and on and on.

lyle -- i think that is often the case, and that the wife should find support and counselling to make sure they is making good decisions. if the allegations preove true, that would be terrible, and there should be repercussions.

it could also be the case, however, that she regrets it because this is the first time "it" happened in 33 years, and "it" amounted to him grabbing her shoulders.

i agree that we should wait to hear more of the details before guessing at what might have happened, or what might not have happened.

Whoa! We're not even a half-day into this, and everyone is already neatly cemented into their pigeon-hole.

@ 5
Well considering that The Stranger has a history of endorsing candidates with domestic violence in their past I wouldn't hold my breath for a screed about DV; unless it's about how beating up women is irrelevant if a candidate says the right things.

yeah, but why would you regret calling police? most of the time they just mediate these things out after people have the chance to cool down a little bit and tell their side of the story with a clear head.

i also know that they probably would not have taken him to jail unless she had visible marks in the area of her neck. unless she was able to convince them sufficiently that he was trying to choke her, in which case, Why do that if you really are just overreacting and this was a matter of him trying to hold you back or defend himself in a mutual fight?

There is way too little information available to draw any significant conclusions, and half of what is reported in the first hours of an incident like this usually turns out to be wrong.

Sounds like Licata understands this. Maybe we can all save the histrionics for later, too, eh?

lyle @13

i also know that they probably would not have _________ unless __________ ...

This is how rumors get started.

lyle @13:

from the Settle Times: "Anytime police respond to domestic violence calls, officers are required by state law to arrest the person they determine is the primary aggressor, said Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt. There are no exceptions, she said."

So much for your speculation.

And now, a meditation on what we think we know...

Posted by lostboy | October 10, 2007 1:48 PM

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Once in a while,
I'm standing here, doing something.
And I think,
"What in the world am I doing here?"
It's a big surprise.

DV allegations aside, I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here.

McGiver has a bad temper and there are many who have been on the receiving end of his tirades. That doesn't automatically mean that he is also guilty of domestic violence, but this story didn't surprise me in the least.

John Manning, who held that seat before McIver, was forced to step down due to DV charges.

McIver is a good man. His wife is a good woman. They need to patch things up. And they will. End of story.

What a fluff piece Erica. What would have been your report if this had been some white, conservative elected bubba from suburbia?

Though it's too early to know any of the details of this case, or what it means to Seattle and the World beyond it, I never the less think it's important that we take a moment to stop and reflect on the fact that this absolutely, utterly and irrevocably refutes everything elenchos has ever said about anything, backdated to the beginning of time.

I was at the Gennesse Dog Park when Q13 Fox New's Susan West came to get some public reaction to McIver's arrest. She called what happened to the city council member "unfortunate". She was referring to the fact that the police responded to McIver's Wife's 911 call even though his wife had hung up.

Interesting if not hugely slimey spin I would say.
