Love in Action

posted by on October 11 at 15:41 PM

Given a choice between their gay friends and relatives and a religion—Christianity, liberal, conservative, whatever—defined by anti-gay bigotry, young people are choosing their gay friends and relatives. Good job, Rev. Hutcherson.

Sure...Episcopal churches are like Catholic-light...but at least they're accepting...more than that, actually. Strange side note, in Philly at the OutFest, the Episcopal pastor marched behind the Baptists who I seriously thought would burst into flames if they came within 10 miles of open displays of homosexuality.

The Latvians will ultimately be a GOOD thing for civil rights, because they will reinforce the association in people's minds between anti-gay ideas and brain-dead hateful thugs.

That was a really interesting article. I guess there's hope for the future yet.

Sweet. Good to know some people have brains.

No surprise there. I'm always shocked by the cognitive dissonance conservative Christians have between the pacifist, communitarian message of Christ and their own hateful rhetoric, but peoples' rejection of them in favor of loving their neighbors pleases me without surprising me.

@3 - now if only they could accomplish that without inciting violence...

Fascinating. I keep telling myself that this is the case--that the loony fundamentalists will eventually drive people away. But then the state I live in votes to outlaw gay marriage and in the run-up to the election vilifies the gays like nobody's business. Here's hoping change comes sooner rather than later. I mean, lord. I turn 32 this year. I'm not going to live forever.

"With the publication of this study, homosexuality's long, mean run as the hot-button issue that reliably rallies the faithful is probably finished."

Homosexuality hasn't been what rallies the faithful for quite some time now. It's "secular humanism" which does that. Homosexuality is viewed as the devilish symptom of a larger problem... It's just that the gays are easier to talk about in a concrete manner, and lots of young people raised in the faith have sexual hang-ups that make it easy to feel anger towards anyone more sexually liberated than they.

Great article, anyway.

Hey, it's "Good News"!

Get it?! (que the rim shot)

I'm a little skeptical though, I have a hard time believing evangelicals, dwindling in numbers or not, are going to give up the power that they have amassed. They were never the majority to begin with, yet they still managed to bring this planet that much closer to hell on earth in the last 10 years.

It is nice to think that my generation is not characterized by Paris Hilton and the jackasses on Laguna Beach and we really are mindful of our religious ideas.

i've been saying this was inevitable for years. the next gen is not so intolerant--they are growing up with out gay kids in junior high and high school, and they just see their friends and neighbors--not a boogeyman--when they hear the word "gay." it's no big whoop for them. when they get to the age of 30 or so, we'll see gay marriage in this country, and not before.

interesting article and
TANGENT TIME!

it lead somehow (through Jesus General?) to Tom Tomorrow's piece about coining the new phrase "Going Republican" sort of like going postal.

I think you, Mr. "Santorum" Savage, should work on getting the phrase refined and useful --not to mention used.

I guess when the conservative school board member is found in the stable at 2 am with her knickers around her ankles and knocked unconscious by her daughter's stallion she's "gone seriously republican" ??

Would that work? You and Tom Tomorrow need to work on it. (He mentioned Craig and Klutzee but completely forgot the pageboy IM Foley. So last year!)

Jewish kids would never choose to live with a gay relative instead of their Orthodox family.

This is because Judaism is a religion that honors children. Even the most observant Orthodox Jewish family is a haven for gay children. Being gay in a Jewish family is easy.

Christianity is a religion of ignorance and hatred.

That's funny, I live in NY and have never seen an observant orthodox Jewish gay couple. Are you hiding them somewhere, Issur?
