I wonder how many people so fully embracing the "it's the owners!" meme also agree with this "personal responsibility" charge when, say, the topic is hand guns? After all it's irresponsible hand gun "owners" that are the problem, right? Not the guns.

The problem with large powerful dogs like pits is not necessarily a behavior inherent to their particular breed, rather it is the fact that ALL dogs under certain circumstances will bite. And the more powerful the dog... the worse the bite. Pits are very, very powerful animals. When they bite it is bound to cause serious damage.

Now. Given that fact (the rather unique trait of pits as powerful dogs) think of them like we think of guns. While I support second amendment rights I cannot in good conscience support the right to own fully automatic weapons by the general citizenry. Not with out special licenses, etc. Also dog park restrictions on larger and powerful breeds (mandatory separate areas for instance) would not seem unwarranted.

Why is is so absurd to do this with large or powerful animals?

Certainly you would help eliminate the bad owners this way. It could only HELP the breed.
