Slog - Comments on For Your Brunch Consideration...

Beginning tomorrow, Smith will be serving brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. From the menu (the chef is from Licorous): • Baked eggs with Dijon cream, gruyère, herbed baguette, $8 • Braised pork belly with sunny-side up egg, $9 • Cinnamon-sugar baguette with apples and gruyère, broiled, $6 • The elusive Scotch egg, $5 (surely better than the one at the Athenian) Also now on the dinner menu: chicken pot pie and roasted marrow. Someone recently likened the decor at Smith to the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland. True. Also, Smith is the seventh business...

I really don't like Smith. Those bacon/cheese/date appetizers sucked ASS, even the waitress was like, "are you sure you want those? Have you had them before?" I had to talk her into letting me order five shriveled putrid bites. When they came to our table half an HOUR after we ordered, my friend and I couldn't stop laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. And what the FUCK is up with "trout with ham"???! Also, no descriptions of anything on the menu... just stylishly difficult to read menu titles.

That plus the dead animal heads presiding over my table ensured I will never go back to eat there. I could see going for a beer with people who maybe really love shriveled candy bacon bites, but I'd never choose to go there myself, not when there's the unpretentious and jukebox-eriffic Canterbury on the same street a few blocks down.

I will now to go Restaurant Reader Reviews and post this on Smith's page. The public should know.

The waitress tried to talk you out of ordering them, you insisted, and now you blame Smith for serving you shitty food. That makes a lot of sense.

I've tried the burger, devils, beet salad, and recently the pot pie. All were terrible. I want to like their food because it's a neighborhood place and I like the ambiance, but its just not good. The only thing that's good is the putine.

Seriously. How much free press are you going to give this place. Food sucks. The staff is slow. If this wasn't part of the whole Lindas franchise, would you keep writing about it? I really don't think so.

I have to agree about the odd menu with no descriptions... Makes ordering foreboding. I lucked out with great, simply prepared, giant mussels. The greens in olive oil were pretty good, too, for vegetables in a bar. What I love about Smith is the conversation-inducing looong table.

Comment by COMTE

You haters are out of your freakin' minds - there is not a single item on Smith's menu (and I've had many, albeit not all) that sucks. Devils on horseback are crack-on-a-plate delicious, the burgers just as good as Linda's or King's, the strip steak is yummy, although admittedly a somewhat skimpy portion - but other than that, it's all good.

I was literally thinking last Sunday that I wished Smith served breakfasty foods on the weekend, and now my dream has come true!

You-all can just stay away as far as I'm concerned, because that just means all the more room for ME!

In fact, I might even pop by there tomorrow morning.

Maybe the devils on a horseback appreciation is a genetic thing, and you can only appreciate them if you have a certain quaternary combination in your DNA. Or, it may be a moral failing of mine that I don't like them. Either way, Comte and Dan, you guys are welcome to mine :D
