Slog - Comments on First They Came for the Thong Panty Liners...

...and I didn't speak up because--wait a minute. Thong panty liners? I've never heard of thong panty liners and they've already come for them? Anyway, an artist in Colorado Springs is being censored--CENSORED, PEOPLE!--because The Man, or someone, doesn't dig her thong panty liner art. The piece is called "Freedom," and it seems that the Powers That Be hate artist Jocely Nevel's freedom. A lot. Newspeakblog is all over it....

I too am offended at the sight of these!

If I wanted to see a bunch of "mouse pillows" on display, I'd go to - um, go to, er - my nearest grocery/convenience/drugstore and walk down the "feminine hygiene" aisle, which is only place where such affronts to my delicate sensibilities should be properly confined!

"yeah they wouldn't let me put this video in the window at 125 Bijou because it would "scare little children". Being the charlatan that I am, I chose to submit a different video." (link is "http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1184404488&channel=686995336&lineup=-1")

Actually really is scary - and yet hypnotic. It also contains some omic-like synthetic "music."

People really can be shocked by anything, can't they? I could understand the outrage if these were used panty liners, because that would be a health problem. But new ones... c'mon, people, they're just cotton pads with tape on the back. What's the big deal?

How did Beauty vs. Ideology become the theme of this string? Look again. Is Ms. Nevel's work not beautiful? I know her work and it's always beautiful. That's what makes her such an effective polemicist. Check the URL above, documenting (poorly) the Chicago work and you'll get an idea.
If "Truth is Beauty," and Keat's words haunt us all with their radical profundity, then J.N. is one of those who plumbs beauty for truth and vice versa. (That's what the avant garde do.)

From KRCC.org:
A project that uses art to distract from empty downtown storefronts has proved a little too distracting. Colorado Springs' Downtown Partnership started the "Visually Aesthetic Spaces" program in September. It fills empty shop windows with works by local artists. But one piece, called "Freedom," by Jocelyn Nevel was only up for 9 days before the building's owner asked that it be removed. Noel Black and Kate Dawson report.

the funny thing about the thong pantyliners come to find out is my two friends were downtown outside the sub shop arguing about what they were, my one friend's argument being "they must be little subs, I mean it's a sub shop for chris'sake" and my other friend saying "no honey, they are pantiliners", you can imagine the rest. apparently it's still up.

it also cracks me up that Colorado Srings is all about trying to change their image to the rest of the nation, hence our big "diversity fair" Downtown, and yet we get national publicity about somebody wanting pantiliners removed from a shop window. yeah, they're fucked until they blow up Focus on the Family.
