Slog - Comments on Federalist #55

I had the best Halloween costume at the party I was at in the N. Greenlake neighborhood last Saturday night. I went, as I always do, as James Madison. Meanwhile, I had this text message exchange with a friend who was at another party about the best costume there: From: ————— There's a dead-Bonnie-and-Clyde couple here. The girl looks EXACTLY like Bonnie. 10/27/07 8:55pm To: ————— Cool! Faye Dunaway version? Or actual Bonnie P. version? And is it the costume or is it her? 10/27/07 9:00pm From:————— Bonnie style. It's totally her. 10/27/07 9:36pm...

josh, i love your bonnie & clyde obsession but i really need to state this for the record:

an adult wearing a costume on a holiday that has been stolen from children is bad enough. far worse is the notion of costume parties held four or five days before the actual holiday.

halloween is october 31. anyone over the age of 12 wearing a costume before that date should be questioned.

I wouldn't mind a narration of Mr. Feit's bowel movements, actually. I'm somewhat intrigued to know whether or not they require one flush, two flushes, or both--with some plunger action. Do they occasionally crack the porcelain? Do they smell like Dan's pubes, or are they refreshing, like a cool winters forest?

Do tell.

kerri harrop, I love you.

Halloween was bad enough when it was just children in homemade Tinkerbell costumes going door-to-door for their Hershey's Kisses and Nestle's Crunch bars. Today's combination of megacommercialism and inane adults decked out for days in asinine and pretentious costumery, thereby stealing the rotting hulk of the holiday from the kids, is vastly worse.

Decline of western civilization...

@7 and @14, what the hell is wrong with you. Jesus. Halloween has been stolen from children? I can’t see how you have a problem with adults having an excuse to throw a party and have a good time. Do you hate New Year’s too? Has it been stolen from the pagans?

I could easily see how someone could hate slutty costumes, slutty costumes on little girls, store-bought costumes with no creativity involved (for kids or adults), promotion of unhealthy eating habits, etc.

But, you really hate costume parties?

People who hate costume parties usually fucking suck at dressing up. They show up to the party looking like a freakshow, and everybody laughs at them. Followed by the tossing of eggs, tomatoes, and big fuckin' rocks.

Those people will forever hate Halloween, and will take it out on everybody who does not, by whatever means they see fit. Like, claiming we're all pedophiles or should be questioned.

Deep down inside, they're still crying, so who cares? Party on!!!

Comment by Lawrence Molloy

First of all, I definitely want to see a photo of Josh as James Madison, as I believe it would be more accurate then the lithograph that seems to be omnipresent when it comes to the man. Second, Josh's brilliance, his love for the U.S., and esotericness is what makes his entries worth reading. John Jay was a fine contributor to the early Federalist papers (what was the reason again that he did not stay on with Madison and Hamilton?). Alexander Hamilton's notion of an educated elite running the country was based on his pers. histoire and GIANT ego. James Madison's notion of good government (Federalist #5, tyranny of the minority, in and of itself earned him a place in constitutional history) and a well structured and executed constitution is evident in spades throughout the Federalist papers. But more importantly, Madison did the work for us. Josh knows that, and you should too. Given the likes of this town , the type locality Seattleite would probably go to a Halloween party as Scoopy Doo (except Charles M. who would be encased in a cardboard box (with extra square edges) claiming he was Mutare Port Building Philip Cortelyou Johnson never got to build)

See, that's where we disagree. His "esotericness" smacks of effort while simultaneously being really uninteresting. He should stick to straight news and leave the 'quirky and interesting' beat to people who are actually quirky and interesting.

Yeah, Julie, I hate costume parties. Hate 'em, loathe 'em, detest 'em. Didn't like Halloween when I was 5, didn't like it when I was 10, haven't liked it in the decades since. The candy would have been cool, but not worth the indignity of dressing up. Hey, at least I'm consistent.

As for New Year's, I'm not concerned about the pagans. No, it's been stolen from the drinkers. It's Amateur Night.

And to Mr. Poe, if not having the slightest desire to do so constitutes "sucking" at dressing up, then yeah, I fucking suck at dressing up. But I would never show up at those absurd dress-up parties, so you don't have to worry yourself about my suckitude.
