There should be mandatory castration for all child abusers.

I can't believe the kid only had bruises and welts if the 2x4 broke. Wow. Tough kid.

I don't really know why you post this stuff all the time. To raise awareness of abuse? Or is it funny to you? Do you just want a reaction? Because if your intentions are anything but pure, please just stop.

@3--If you've read the comments to these entries someone always explains why Dan posts these stories. It shouldn't be a surprise. I mean, we all know that Dan thinks child abuse is a laugh riot. Don't we all? Sheesh.

What #2 said. That, or his dad is a big pussy, in (obviously) more ways than one.

Jesus that's sick.

I'm wondering if every ECDAMAF post should just come with a little FAQ icon/link describing why Dan posts these, so folks like Amelia and others don't have to nag like this in the comments every time.

@6:

Well, unless the 2x4 was already cracked, I'm guessing the impact force required to break it in the manner described would be considerable, meaning dad probably isn't a "pussy" - at least so far as his swing is concerned.

That's one lucky kid (to not have several broken ribs or internal injuries, that is).

@ #3, Dan is offended too. He's offended that the asshat christianists think that being gay automatically disqualifies you as a good parent. Meanwhile this dude thinks his slow homework producing kid deserves to be tied up and beaten with a 2x4.

It's a bit of preaching to the choir but I have no problem with it. You should be angry, but not at Dan. At least not for this.

For those candles on the Manorah that are not real bright, Dan posts these stories to help us understand that having a Father and Mother is the best for children. The record of evidence is just being presented for all to see. A mixed gender two parent family is safe and nurturing for children. Where as we all know that a two parent same gender family produces violent socio-paths and child abusers. See, it's not complex.

I'm with Amelia. We get it. A ban on gay marriage on the premise that straight parents are best for kids is idiotic. We are reading SLOG and we know it. These posts are pointless. Do we know that this kid's dad isn't gay? He's hitting his kid because he's straight? What the?

I know, not a day goes by without Dan waking up being pissed off at the unjust world. I can just see him sauntering around, glaring at everyone, suspecting them of homophobia, trying to make eye contact so he can give them the "What!!" look.

Sure, I worship Dan Savage as much as the next Slogger, he's a great writer, seemingly cool guy, blahblahblah. But guess what buddy?! The world IS changing, one day at a time, and your whiny 2938420 posts a day aren't going to hasten the process.

I like the posts. They make an excellent point. And, by the way, Dan isn't the only one doing this. Pam Spaulding over at Pam's House Blend also does it, under a different title.

A suggestion to anyone who is offended: if you see a post with the title beginning "Every Child Deserves..."
simply don't read it.

Okay, I'm a Potter fan AND a dyke…

There is to my knowledge one reference to gays in the books: when Dudley suggests Harry might be one right before he is attacked by Dementors in the Order of the Phoenix.

Plus, there is a lot of slash out there on Harry, most of it being found on an excellent website called The Restricted Section.

There are more specifically gay- and lesbian- themed erotic fanfiction website out there. For lesbian stories: Into Raspberry Swirl and Madam Hooch's Broom Closet (yes, Hooch definitely has lesbian vibes, but that may be because of the actress). The most obvious lesbian pairings are of course Hermione/Ginny (duh), Parvati/Padma and Lavender Brown. The bestest (gay) pairing, in my opinion but that's just my personal kinks talking of course, is Harry/ Snape, and there used to be a great archive called Walking the Plank about that precise pairing.

All of this of course is off the top of my head, but I did plan at one point to write a whole article on gays and lesbians trying to reclaim the Harry phenomenon through fanfiction. That was a few years back (sigh).

I don't know if these websites still survive (I doubt it, actually), but I have kept megatons of data- entirely for academic purposes, of course. Ahem.

And I'm sorry I rushed to write my comment and haven't read the comments yet… Forgive me if I said something awful or repeated people…

I like the ECDAMAF entries, but I see no need to call people names if they come here to say they don't.

Having said that, I also think it's a good idea, if you do decide to post an opinion here, not to take anyone's response to you personally. I mean, who cares what a random stranger thinks of you? Hopefully you have people in your life who think you're brilliant and wonderful. I do, so go ahead and call me what you like.

I think the world needs more parents like Dan and his husband, and less like the putrid, criminal subject of this slog post. (Duh.)

# 36:
since you brought it up, I dont believe Rowling ever outed Harry as a cunt. Though I did have my suspisions. Perhaps Hagrid could have beat the cuntness out of him with a 2X4, or at least make him do his potions homework faster.

@27: It's a good thing you cleared that up, because up until now, I was so sure "cunt" was a compliment.

Sorry, Grandma!

(Isn't it LESS offensive if it's from a woman? Like how homos call each other fags?)

While I can sympathize with Amelia (her heart's in the right place), I admit I have shifted my views on these posts. Initially I thought they were too much like those tabloid rag abuse exploitation stories, the kind that give people a creepy thrill by presenting all the gory details of a real-life horror movie. I feel uncomfortable with the way they're presented--short news bites shoved in there with regular news and funny stuff--and I worried that they would desensitize readers to the hideousness of the crimes.

But I think what makes these stories different is that they ARE treated with respect. There's no pointless commentary, only the very sad irony of that title. Amelia, you need to cut Dan some slack. He doesn't find this stuff funny; he's a dad who loves his family and cares about people--that's why he's so angry. His intentions are pure, so take everything else with a grain of salt.

I think what disturbs me about these stories is that Dan's rightful anger over the ridiculous idea that only straights make good parents almost seems to come across as glee that some straight parents are such assholes and do such terrible things to their children. It's like the anger takes over and he is almost happy this stuff happens to these kids because it proves how wrong the asinine laws are.

I want to be clear here that I absolutely DO NOT THINK FOR ONE SECOND that Dan is happy about this abuse of children. He seems like far to good and caring a parent but I do sometime get a sense of glee - probably from the sarcastic title and lack of expression of sympathy for the kids or suggestion to help the kids of asshole straight parents (because allowing gay people to marry - while the only right and human thing to do - will not stop that type of abuse from happening to those kids!).

Amelia does not have a free pass because she's 17, Greg. Name-calling is nowhere near mature, but we are nowhere near mature here on Slog. And her arguments on Dan's posts involving abused children in straight families can be addressed as nothing more than cud.

Talk about selfcentered bullshit. Hey Amelie & the rest of you dorks sickened by these stories- Quess what? You're not the only people who read these stories. New and different readers come across these blogs all the time who don't realize the crap that the religious right say about gays & parenting is false. Dan always starts off these stories the same way and you go ahead and read them. You know what the story is going to be about so why are you reading them? No ones holding a gun to your head. If they bother you so much STOP!
