This is all part of God's plan. Once we're all registered with our spouses, 'they' will come and kill us. Right when we least expect it.

Legend says that Sonya Blade will fight the Lord and free us. It will be epic.

Don't petitioners usually need to collect thousands more signatures than technically required, in case a bunch of them are invalid? So, they fell a hell of a lot more than 116 short.

so they don't want "activist judges" to make law, if the lawmakers make laws they want it vetoed by executive officials, they don't want a small group of lawmakers elected to office, they want to have a popular referendum... sounds like they can't decide who should make the laws of the land- it's whoever will make the laws teh way they want at the moment apparently- but of course they never expect to actually have to follow the laws themselves, only force them on other people. Slippery logic can cover anything with the right tweaking.

Well, remember, they also believe in Satan, who has mysterious powers as well, so I'm sure they blame him for their loss, rather than an Indifferent (much-less pro-homo) Supreme Being

#3, I believe they did collect more than was needed and after all the signatures were validated they were 116 short.

Which makes me wonder... is it illegal to sign a petition with a false name?

this is what's airing in the Bay Area and in LA and other parts of California right now:

Hopefully we do get some equal rights eventually but Gov. SchwartzenReagan is a total asshole and going to veto any marriage law that comes to his desk.

Dan,

What's with the Error 404's on your Della post? They are ruining my day.

The failure by the bigots in Oregon might be an early refelection of the "Massachustetts effect", people see that same sex marraige happens and the world goes on. From what I hear from Oregon people there were just disinterested in signing.

I'd love to have some asshole ask me to sign a petition like this. It would be such a pleasure to tell them to go fuck themselves.

In light of the violent shitstorms that occurred in Oregon over gay rights initiatives in the past, this is a really good sign for the country.

And note to the timid fuckheads in Olympia: Oregon is more conservative than Washington. Get cracking on some real rights.

But the article also mentions opponents will start collecting sigs for an initiative drive - and knowing by how slim a margin their previous effort failed, they'll no doubt be even more diligent in trying to gather far more than the requisite number needed next time around.

Sounds like it's not over yet by a stretch.

@11

Yeah. That'll show 'em.

Or! You could be very personable and discuss how you feel with them. If that's too much to ask, and you really just want to fire them up, give them a hug. And gently close the door.

@5 This was indeed Satan's hand. It has all the marks of the Devil: populism in action, the number six in the total missing signatures, sheep's wool of validity draped over what turned out to be wily wolverine invalid signatures. GET THEE BEHIND ME, SATAN! Good Christians are working for the Lord here!

@13 If they couldn't get enough signatures for this, I don't think they're going to manage it for a full initiative to the people. That requires many, many more signatures, and even given the extra time they'll have, I believe they'll come up short again, particularly after the law goes into effect and Oregon doesn't explode into cannibalism.

116 short! Ha ha. I blame home-schooled math "students".

If one train leaves New York at 6:15 pm traveling 80 mph, and another leaves Boston at 6:30 pm traveling 70 mph, what would Jesus do?

Which makes me wonder... is it illegal to sign a petition with a false name?

Yes, it is illegal to sign a petition with a false name, so if you do it just make sure that you don't give your real address, also many of the people who collect signatures are smart enough to realize that "Hugh G. Rection" is probably a false name and that "1122 Boogie Woogie Avenue, Seattle, WA 98666" is not a real address. I recommend using Jane Hague's name and address and signing petitions for the same initiativesmultiple times with it because the cops might look at this and figure "Yeah, that sounds like something that crazy, drunk bitch would do, get tanked up and tool around the county signing initiative petitions. Let's throw her ass in the joint."

Don't petitioners usually need to collect thousands more signatures than technically required, in case a bunch of them are invalid? So, they fell a hell of a lot more than 116 short.

The anti-gays claimed to turn in 63,000. Once those were sorted and culled by elections staff (a process that tosses out entire sheets if they're misnumbers, inaccurately dated, or have a problem with the circulator's signatures), the official raw number of signatures turned in was 60,531. Those signatures went out to the counties for statistical sampling, and the petitioners had a record high validity rate—almost 91 percent. But that still wasn't enough—only 55,063 were valid, 116 short of the 55,179 needed. (A second petition, to send our new non-discrimination law to a public vote, is still in the validation process, but had less raw signatures than the domestic partnership one, so there's a good chance it will also miss the mark).

And yes, the anti-gay campaign will most certainly try to do a repeal of the law. For that, they need 82,769 valid signatures by next July. (I think they can pull it off: They collected 55K valid ones in just 90 days, and now have 8 months to scare up almost twice as many. But the law will go into effect first, so voters will have a chance to see that the sky isn't falling.)

Jesus, Dan, God is telling them to work harder! He just wants more devotion and is dangling the carrot in front of them!

It just doesn't work to use a rational argument with irrational people.

... unless God had a cunning plan to make it quite obvious that they were going to waste a lot of energy and then fail ...

Watch the petition lists for signatures with dates that fall on a Sunday. If they were told by their church to sign a petition that church would be in violation of their non-profit status.

Posted by monkey | October 9, 2007 1:08 PM

@26 It's too hard to prove they were "told" to do it. Lots of churches will simply mention the petition and announce where it will be after the service has ended, "should anyone be interested in having a look." And that's not illegal; it's only unethical.

This kind of thing makes me immoderately happy.

I realize a proper lady doesn't say things like this, but I can't wait to marry my man. It's going to be a big, hilarious deal when it happens, let me tell you.

It's gonna happen.

In the past week the deaths of Spc. Vincent G. Kamka, 23, and Lance Cpl. Jeremy Burris, 22, marked the 100th and 101rst Washington state related deaths in the Bush/Savage war on Iraq.

Excerpt from "Say Yes To War" by Dan Savage October 2002:

In the meantime, invading and rebuilding Iraq will not only free the Iraqi people, it will also make the Saudis aware of the consequences they face if they continue to oppress their own people while exporting terrorism and terrorists. The War on Iraq will make it clear to our friends and enemies in the Middle East (and elsewhere) that we mean business: Free your people, reform your societies, liberalize, and democratize... or we're going to come over there, remove you from power, free your people, and reform your societies for ourselves.

Israel is a gay paradise compared to America. The most conservative and orthodox Jews are pro-gay and pro-gay marriage.

Only Christianity creates bigots.
