Slog - Comments on Equal Rights Oregon

Religious bigots in Oregon fail to block gay rights and civil union laws from taking effect. Worth lifting a long quote from the AP: State elections officials reported Monday the effort fell only 116 valid signatures short of the 55,179 needed to suspend the law and place it on the November 2008 ballot for a popular vote. That means that as of Jan. 1, Oregon will join eight other states that have approved spousal rights in some form for same-sex couples - Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Maine, California, Washington and Hawaii. Massachusetts is the only state that allows...

so they don't want "activist judges" to make law, if the lawmakers make laws they want it vetoed by executive officials, they don't want a small group of lawmakers elected to office, they want to have a popular referendum... sounds like they can't decide who should make the laws of the land- it's whoever will make the laws teh way they want at the moment apparently- but of course they never expect to actually have to follow the laws themselves, only force them on other people. Slippery logic can cover anything with the right tweaking.

Yes, it is illegal to sign a petition with a false name, so if you do it just make sure that you don't give your real address, also many of the people who collect signatures are smart enough to realize that "Hugh G. Rection" is probably a false name and that "1122 Boogie Woogie Avenue, Seattle, WA 98666" is not a real address. I recommend using Jane Hague's name and address and signing petitions for the same initiativesmultiple times with it because the cops might look at this and figure "Yeah, that sounds like something that crazy, drunk bitch would do, get tanked up and tool around the county signing initiative petitions. Let's throw her ass in the joint."

Comment by Amy J. Ruiz

Don't petitioners usually need to collect thousands more signatures than technically required, in case a bunch of them are invalid? So, they fell a hell of a lot more than 116 short.

The anti-gays claimed to turn in 63,000. Once those were sorted and culled by elections staff (a process that tosses out entire sheets if they're misnumbers, inaccurately dated, or have a problem with the circulator's signatures), the official raw number of signatures turned in was 60,531. Those signatures went out to the counties for statistical sampling, and the petitioners had a record high validity rate—almost 91 percent. But that still wasn't enough—only 55,063 were valid, 116 short of the 55,179 needed. (A second petition, to send our new non-discrimination law to a public vote, is still in the validation process, but had less raw signatures than the domestic partnership one, so there's a good chance it will also miss the mark).

And yes, the anti-gay campaign will most certainly try to do a repeal of the law. For that, they need 82,769 valid signatures by next July. (I think they can pull it off: They collected 55K valid ones in just 90 days, and now have 8 months to scare up almost twice as many. But the law will go into effect first, so voters will have a chance to see that the sky isn't falling.)

Reporting from Oregon...
