I would have expected, as a right of center candidate, he would take more votes from Senator Clinton, but I can see that for Sen Biden as well.
Someone had a pretty convincing argument for Colbert's candidacy being a violation of federal law, since Comedy Central has paid for it. Some TV show guy got in trouble for it in 2004.

No, Fox or somebody had a reality show about running for President, and they actually submitted the star of the show on the ballot, and they got busted. A TV production company can't do your campaign; it's a contribution.
But couldn't they do it and then declare it as a contribution?
