He actually compared himself to Tom Robinson? What an asshole.
Everyone keeps talking about what he said about Anita Hill, but what about what he says about liberals? He makes it pretty clear he is not impartial.
it's been a while since i've read "to kill a mockingbird", but isn't tom robinson convicted of a crime he didn't commit?
thomas, on the other hand, was "acquitted" for something he could very well have done, while his accuser was publicly degraded as a lying, delusional, jealous, scorned whore.
aw, poor baby. must suck going through all that and end up sitting on the most powerful judiciary in the country, if not the world.
You know in this world there are people who honestly are victims and others who are just volunteers. Thomas is a volunteer.

Thomas is another example of the Republicans incompetence being used to justify their anti-government ideology. Affirmative Action is only supposed to place equally qualified minorities in higher positions, Thomas who is obviously unqualified for the post is a proof for the Republican (and thomas's) contention that Affirmative Action is discriminatory.
BTW anyone who says Whoop-de-damn-do to being confirmed to the supreme court is a complete asshole

Ok that Seattle Weekly column was just weird. I thought it was funny that his living in St Louis experience wasn't, "I made some good friends with a lot of black people," but was more like, "Some black people were cashiers when I bought my groceries and they didn't kill me so now I'm not afraid anymore!" Like ... what?

Yeah, that Seely piece is sort of reminiscent of Bill O'Reilly's amazement of the civility on display at Sylvia's in Harlem.

If you saw any of the interviews of Thomas on TV, you could see the tight leash he keeps himself on.
His story is a really powerful one.
His life is one that could have destroyed a weaker person.
He's found a safe place on the Supreme Court where he can be in recovery for the rest of his life.
Let's hope there is no relapse.
I love the Seely thing. St. Louis is consistently rated high on the most dangerous city scales, but I didn't know it is a majority black city. You certainly wouldn't know it by driving around my neighborhood.
It is definitely a segregated city. North side =black, South side =white.
I'm more afraid of the white people.
Also, I've never had my car stolen. But my brother did. By a white guy.
East St. Louis is another story.
East St. Louis is pretty bad, but unless you have to go to a strip club or purchase crack, you never have to set foot in East St. Louis.

I'd like to plop Christopher Frizelle down in North St. Louis all on his lonesome with just an issue of the latest New Yorker on a Saturday night and see what he comes up with.... I really doubt he'd be making many friends. More likely he'd just be noticing a lot of hostility.

I don't know, I read the Seely article as a satirical look at how the stereotype of "white bread" America thinks and the way in which Seattle's been trying to segregate the Afro American community to the outskirts of town.
Partly because that's what I've been observing. If this article provokes various forms of discussions good or bad then I believe it has served a purpose.
