I've been hearing a lot about how the Red Sox are now supposedly the team that everybody hates, and I can only assume that this is mostly coming from bitter Yankees fans (Chicago Fan notwithstanding), as most people I know are fairly fond of the Sox. They're still the Arsenal to the despised Yankees' Chelsea. They'd have to put up several decades of continued dominance and asshattery to equal the level of loathing directed at the Yankees.

There's a lot of pride among ethnicities and nationalities that have come to be Bostonians. There's also a sense of ownership of place that doesn't really exist in Seattle.

I think it's more accurate to say that Boston is about ethnicity, tradition and neighborhoods.

It really didn't seem about Racism (big R) so much as people had their spots and you didn't stop along the way unless you had business there or knew people. Downtown Boston was the crossroads for everyone and those neighborhood rules didn't apply. Hey, this held true for whitey-me in other white neighborhoods. I didn't go to Southie to get my ice cream cone.

The mindsets that go along with the long ethnic traditions there die hard. But, yeah, a lot has changed there since I was a kid.
