Awesomest “Green” Campaign Ever?

posted by on October 3 at 14:25 PM

Nonprofit 1% For the Planet, which asks its member businesses to donate one percent of their profits to the organization (and in turn encourages consumers to use those companies’ products) has an awesome new ad campaign that manages to avoid the holier-than-thou pitfalls of so much other “green” marketing. (See here
, here, and here.)

The other ad reads, “Problem: The California Condor is Going Extinct. Solution: The California Condor Should Have More Sex.”

That's clever. I could get on board with a campaign like that.

isn't this another layer of redundancy and overhead? i couldn't find a list of acceptable environmental orgs on their website, i didn't look long. but this seems to be another cog in the non-profit industrial complex.

This reminds me of a Derek & Clive discussion on whales.

CLIVE:
People go, they're all moaning on, they say whales are more intelligent than human beings.
DEREK:
Yeah.
CLIVE:
Are they? Do you think whales and dolphins are more intelligent than human beings?
DEREK:
Oh yeah.
CLIVE:
Why?
DEREK:
Says so.
CLIVE:
Yeah, but they're not. Whales are fucking stupid. Can you mention one whale in the history of mankind that has had a record in the top ten? Can you? Can you mention one whale who's written the equivalent of, er, 'Othello', Shakespeare, 'Health & Efficiency'? They've produced nothing in the way of literature. All they've fucking produced is a load of other whales and all they eat is fucking plankton, and they call them intelligent. Can you imagine drifting along in the sea with your mouth open and a lot of fucking plankton going in?
DEREK:
Yeah, I can imagine that.
CLIVE:
You'd like it, would you, just drifting around in the sea? And you can't-, they're such cunts they can't even breathe underwater. They have to keep coming up the whole fucking time and spouting.

Derek and Clive were the best.

I'm not sure I get what's so green about this organization. They get one percent, and they produce ads. How is that green?

The association between cute li'l ol' dolphins and "the ecology" is so 1979 it hurts. Where's the, uh, beef?

Working Assets, 1%, green design, etc. It's a bunch of crap. The system capitalism and consumerism that created our current environmental is about as likely to solve it as Dixie slave holders were to end slavery.

But first, the condors should stop eating animal carcasses filled with lead shot. For the money that's been spent returning them to the wilds, we could afford to give them freshly slaughtered wagyu beer.
