Comments on Zoe Scofield: All Over the Goddamned Place

I also noticed that Scofield has a well written Wikipedia entry. Very canny use of the new media by a young artist. I can't watch the video with sound here at work, but it looks lovely. Congratulations Zoe!

I wondered about those dancers they showed on the screens behind the band at the Gorge shows- thanks for the info on the local talent. Say what you will about DMB- I'll give Dave his props for working with Seattle artists (a friend of mine played keyboards on his solo album).

wow..... looks like modern dance has finally learned how to SELL OUT. Once a holdout of the avant-garde now part of mediocre pop culture.
In response to the first comment we all could have our own wikipedia entries if we were egomaniacal enough to write them ourselves. Copy and paste your bio on the wiki website under the "anyone can edit" link and viola! you're instantly a part of history.

Wow, you must be bitter about something, eh? I find that perspective so incredibly tiring; What's wrong with making a living off of what you know and love? That, to me, sounds a lot better than working for a corporation and stuffing money away in a 401k. Feel free to toil yourself away into obscurity.

@ BitterJames - what I like about this video is that the dance looks like real modern dance. This video isn't a sellout, the dance isn't dumbed down for mass audiences the way it is on SYTYCD. And for an artist of Dave Matthews' magnitude to use not only a local choreographer but her own dancers is a big fucking deal.

And I know how wiki works. I was commenting on 1) the fact she did it, because I don't think many artists at her level of success have availed themselves to the idea, and 2) how well written it is. I have read a lot of bios, press materials, and grant applications from Seattle dancers and the quality of the writing in Zoe's entry is....all too rare.

Okay- I feel like i should probably interject and respond to Mr. Bitter Buffalo. No, I did not post my own Wikipedia entry, it was posted by a group of SCCC students who were working on a artist marketing project for school (taught by Brangien Davis and John Sutton- the class was on, heaven forbid, marketing and promoting artists.) They were given all of our promotional and press material and allowed to work with it as needed. To tell you the truth, I haven't even read the Wikipedia post, but I will be sure to now. And no, I don't think there is anything wrong with self-promotion.
As far as making money as an artist, its interesting and rather limited that you would consider that "selling out". What exactly is the requirement or right formula for making money and staying a "true artist"?
If you think choreographing a video for Dave Matthews is what finally made modern dance no longer avant-garde you clearly haven't been paying attention to modern dance and pop culture for quite some time. And I couldn't agree with Dan more, whats wrong with making money doing what you love? If you prefer to be miserable in order to get paid, by all means carry on, but I prefer to love what I do.
Oh and please make sure to come to our show at On the Boards and PICA's TBA festival this year. And yes, we will be getting paid.
