Slog - Comments on The Seattle Pancake Renaissance Continues

I've recently been compelled to slog about pancakes not once but twice. I'm not alone in my flapjack fixation. From the Stranger Restaurant Guide's reader reviews: Five Point Cafe (Belltown) PANCAKES!!! I went here the other night, ready for some good ol' flapjacks - expecting something standard and unmemorable. Whoops—wrong place for that! These pancakes were fantastic! Best I remember having in Seattle. Crispy outside, perfectly fluffy inside, soaking up all the syrup I could throw at them... People walked by, for real, and said 'Oh my god, I'm getting pancakes' after seeing my plate. Posted by AGWIV on...

Comment by D. in Seattle

When I was 5, my air force dad was stationed in Anchorage while the rest of us lived in Sacramento. We would go to visit him via Seattle and one thing we always did was go to the 5 point cafe for pancakes. 20 years later, I moved to Seattle and the first thing I did was go to 5 point.

It's certainly changed a lot over the years. Most notably the vibe, but those pancakes haven't changed. They're still the best.

The Five Point and Mecca are owned by the same person. They have the exact same menu. Sometimes you will see someone who normally works at Mecca picking up a shift at the Five Point (and vice versa). No wonder both places have great pancakes!

Huge fan of both places. Fantastic food.

@ 7, given that almost no one except for myself and a Denver greasy spoon called Pete' Kitchen knows how to make french toast, only a fool would order them over pancakes. Unless they explicitly state that they're using brioche or maybe challah.

@11
Atlas down in the U village used to do some mouth watering Challah french toast.
I used to love Minnie's blueberry pancakes years ago- fat juicy berries cooked into the batter, as big as the plate, dusted with powdered sugar and thinly sliced lemon. They have lost their intiative since then. Now they throw canned blueberries on top.

I love everything about the Five Point, but the one time I had pancakes there, I got food poisoning.

What the fuck. PANCAKE POISONING! How the fuck do you make pancakes poisonous by innocent neglect?

Maybe I played too much Devo in the jukebox and not enough Queensryche.

Comment by COMTE

I had a "Deck Hand Special" at the 5 Point this morning, which includes pancakes, and I'm still feeling just fine.

BTW, even though The Mecca & The 5 Point are owned by the same people, apparently the management styles practiced at each location are vastly different, as evinced by Sam (you'd know her if you were a Mecca regular: blonde, tan, Aussie), who now works at The 5 Point, and urged me to "never go back there (The Mecca) again".
