The Morning News

posted by on September 27 at 7:20 AM

Trigger Happy: Security contractor Blackwater USA, currently under investigation in Baghdad and Washington D.C., is #1 in shooting incidents in Iraq.

Meanwhile in Myanmar: Tear gas, beatings, and at least half-a-dozen dead as government security continues to crack down on protesters.

Keep Throwing Money At It: Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates wants another $42.3 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If approved, the increase would boost the 2008 war budget to $190 billion.

Idiots in Charge: Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, doesn’t hate gay people, he just thinks they’re immoral and go against God’s law.

Hot Air: President Bush is having a meeting with “delegates from the world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters” so they can hammer out some “aspirational goals” to deal with this whole global warming thing.

More Hot Air: Another goddamn presidential debate for the Democrats.

High-Tech Low-Jack: Washington now has a new tool to help keep track of registered sex offenders.

The Will of the People: Challengers of Washington’s “top two” primary system are headed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

All Gas Must Go: Puget Sound Energy is slashing the price of natural gas by 13%.

Why in the gay hell did someone do a video of images from the Last Unicorn with a cover of Listen To Your Heart? LOL! OMG it's a sign that the end is near...

Re: Peter Pace

So General Pace thinks gays and lesbians are immoral and against God's law, but torture and killing are A - OK? Republicans really are incapable of understanding hypocrisy or irony.

Re: Democrats

Did they really say last night that they're going to keep the Iraq War/Occupation going until 2013? With no explanation of how to pay for it or where the troops will come from to fight in it?

That headline should read: Gates demands Congress borrow another $190 billion from the Chinese to fund our wars.

Aspirational goals: so, like, goal-goals. Or like goals maybe. Or maybe like aspirational pneumonia, which is when you breathe foreign matter into your lungs and get an infection. Oh! like greenhouse gases!! I get it. The president's making a giant pun. A giant stupid pun. Either that or he is himself a giant stupid pun.

Re apology tag: This video makes me want to rummage my closets for my old My Pretty Pony and Malibu Barbie sets to recreate a Mattel version of "Zoo." Entirely against my will, of course.

You Stranger folks really missed a classic article today.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/eastsidenews/2003906666_homemakeover27e.html

"Dream of new home becomes reality for Kirkland family."

We are talking about Kirkland not New Orleans. Kirkland must be a slum city tucked between Redmond, Hunts Point and Medina.
Here is what did not make it into that story:
Connie was facing the continued inability to pay for her morning latte.

When asked about the home that was given to her by her parents, “It’s like, oh my God, this house is so old. It has been most hard on the children who have been humiliated at school when their friends live in brand new homes over 5000 square feet.”

“Many of her students are children of local families; some have disabilities, including autism and cerebral palsy.”
[What does that have to do with anything? Lots of people have paying “customers” with disabilities.]

One of her Kirkland neighbors added, “I can’t imagine a more needy family in the entire world. It has been so sad to see her have to work for a living.”

@8 : No, Kirkland isn't some broken-down Detroit slum, but it's not all McMansions and condos either. There's a number of run-down older neighborhoods, especially around the Rose Hill and Forbes Lake area. I can believe that a lot of the old houses there are in pretty bad shape. Also, you're a petty asshole.

What, the orignal soundtrack by America to 'Last Unicorn' wasn't good enough for them? Asshats.

@8,

I'm not a fan of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. I'm not convinced that most of those families are truly in need. (How about building completely new houses for the homeless?) They also don't need to supply lower middle class and poor families with mansions.

However, that woman's house was falling down. Clearly, this isn't an issue of her spending too much money on coffee drinks.
