The ACLU is supporting Craig huh? Interesting and under the pretense that it could have been entrapment. Well, I hate to say it, if they can prove it was entrapment then I have to get behind the ACLU. But it still does not change the fact Craig is a lying, hypocritical closeted asshole. Still, he does have constitutional rights like the rest of us.

Ugh....I have a bitter taste in my mouth now.

@1 - I think this is hilarious. The ACLU's defense for Wide Stance is that he might have wanted to take the cop back to his hotel room to blow him, and the police need to prove otherwise. This isn't exactly in sync with the Senator's "I'm not gay" defense.

I hope the ACLU issues a press release for every motion it files on behalf of the Senator. Wheels of Justice, please turn slowly.

I could care less about Craig anymore. The best part is over. We all know he's gay. And that is what's hurting him the most.

The SLUT looks a bit superfluous at first glance. It only takes about a 1/2 hr to walk from South Lake Union to Westlake. Why spend $50 M to encourage laziness?

Pretty MSM of Slog to call the ACLU's support "unexpected". It is totally in line with their mission of protecting privacy rights, yet Slog seems to think that ACLU=Bleeding Liberals.

Much as I loathe Craig, and delight in seeing karma bite him on the ass, the ACLU is right. We all know that Larry Craig is a closet case, and we know that given the opportunity he was probably going to have sex in that bathroom. But it isn't right to arrest someone for something they were probably going to do.

It is entirely within the realm of possibility that he could have propositioned a guy in the restroom, and gone to a hotel or someplace to have sex. Which would have been perfectly legal. Craig's assertion that it was all a mistake and he's not gay is irrelevant. The problem is that the cops busted him for and act (sex in a public restroom) that may or may not have happened. They would have been on safer legal ground if they'd have let Craig make a more explicit proposal for sex in the bathroom, making it impossible for him to claim it was just a proposition for sex elsewhere. Or (*cringe inducing visual*) waited until he actually showed his junk to the cop.

The cops made the bust too early, when there was still the possibility that an illegal act might not occur, even if it was pretty obvious that was the direction things were probably going. The ACLU is right to defend him, even if he is a hypocritical worm.

RE: Wiretapping. Since when has interception of international data/voice traffic been governed under FISA? FISA's provisions relate only to foreign nationals within the US; traffic in Russia/China/etc. has always been outside its purview. This is a bogus power grab by the Attorney General and the Administration. By gutting or overturning FISA, they're working only on communications that have a beginning or end on US soil i.e., not those of say, the Russian military conducting operations in Daghestan or Chinese military moving towards Taiwan.

The SLUT, to me, is the embodiment of the lack of vision of Paul Allen and Seattle's political leadership.

South Lake Union is Paul Allen's attempt to re-create Portland's Pearl District. But when it comes to getting between downtown Portland and the Pearl, the Portland streetcar is scarcely faster or more reliable than walking. Now we're going to have our own streetcar that only comes every 15 minutes and crawls along through lights in the same shared lane as cars. That may sound appealing to a real estate developer, but what about to the actual consumer, the person who wants to get between downtown and South Lake Union and isn't running on a tourist's timetable?

What makes this such a blown opportunity is there's nothing inherently wrong with using a streetcar for a close-in neighborhood like South Lake Union or Pioneer Square. OK, it's never going to be grade-separated, but you could at least give it its own dedicated lane and make the service fairly frequent.

So the stock response to this criticism will be, "But we only had $50 million, not $200 million." Well then, if you're going to do something on the cheap, maybe you're better off not doing it at all. But I guess Paul Allen can't afford any better.

The ACLU also came to the rescue for RUSH LIMBAUGH.

I think this street car, once people see that something like this actually can be done in seattle, could turn out to be a great thing. If its existence creates the demand for the line to be expanded throughout the city's core, wouldn't that be great?

I first read that as "backwater USA mercenaries"... and spent the next thirty seconds wondering if they were talking about troop withdrawal.

much like our own nightlife sting, the police in craig's case admit they were trying to bust as many as possible as a way to curb behavior, as opposed to patrolling to stop offenses.

i am very glad to hear the ACLU is on board. as long as the police use these tactics and ensnare any potentially innocent people injustices occur.

Twee - I don't want to but I must agree with cressona (that was not easy) but trollies running at grade mixed with all other traffic will only be a flash in the pan - long term the transit value is questionable - Tacoma gives free parking and a free ride - a trolly will take about 1 1/2 hours to get from one end of the city to the other. For short little feeder lines on special streets, westlake, broadway,5th, maybe but as a citywide or regional I don't think so
