Slog - Comments on Speaking of Gay Men Who Grew Up in the '40s and '50s

The infamous Larry Craig is 62 years old, meaning he grew up in a time when it was much different to be a gay man. David Kopay, a former football player for the University of Washington, is 65, meaning he grew up during that same time period. Kopay had some dark days as a gay man in the UW's football program, but he went on to become the first openly gay professional athlete in American team sports, and now he's pledging half his estate—$1 million—to the UW's center for people with different sexual orientations, Q Center.

Thanks Eli. I'm hoping that you posted this to reflect the varied paths homos have taken, good and bad, but greatly influenced by many things. Dan's position on this issue is clearly out of touch and stridently stupid.

Coming out was (and is) difficult and Senator I'd-a-ho' did grow up in a different time, but Dave Kopay never actively campaigned against gay rights for political gain. Let's not be too sympathetic.

Now, on a very shallow, superficial level, is it possible that Craig sought sex in a tearoom because he's a graduate of The Slade Gorton School of Beauty and bathroom sex was his only shot at getting off? Well, that or a glory hole.

I came out in Spokane while in college and was in the hospital after three guys beat the shit out of me at Northpoint Shopping center near the Shopko. Turned out they went to my school.

So...that was in the early 1990's so I can not be too harsh on Craig for not coming out. I CAN be harsh on him for pushing a homophobic agenda in Congress and forcing that homophobia on others. What he chooses to put his family through maybe hell but that is HIS choice. But he has no right to infringe on anyone else's rights who are gay. So as long as he is part of a party that hates gays then his personal life should be on display for everyone. EVERY single fucked up detail. Down to the number of pubic hairs left in the bathroom stall. Hell, we should have video of him creeping around bathrooms posted for all to see. As long as he holds public office while holding homophobic views I want him emotionally destoryed.

It is the least he deserves.

Regarding the donation-- that is AMAZING. It gave me chills when I read that. F'ing awesome.

@6

The Q Center is 10x better than the GLBTC office in my opinion. It's HUGE! And friendly, and staffed. And it's in Schmitz on an upper floor. WAY more discreet for questioning individuals than the main thoroughfare of the HUB club rooms probably. They have lots and lots of books you can check out also.

When I was at the U, the GLBTC office was like queen central...you know the bitchy ugly ones who were there waiting for a normal person to stray in and make them their boyfriend (or gossip topic).

@8 Hey! I hung out at that office all the time. And yes, we did gossip, but everyone gossips.

You do have a point about the discretion part. We once had a closet case crawl from the elevator to the office because he was worried someone in the lounge below would see him.
