Overrated

posted by on September 19 at 10:02 AM

The October issue of Radar has a cover story called “The Overrated 100: A Scientific Survey of the World’s Most Overhyped People, Places & Things.” What’s on the list? Number two is cupcakes, number seven is sex with virgins, number eighteen is China as an economic threat, and number thirty four is, uh, the word “genius.” Not everything on the list is on the website. From the print edition: “The term genius was once reserved for the likes of Einstein and Mozart. But never has an accolade been so casually thrown around…”

I wouldn't call Diane Ackerman exactly overrated. She's listed on the Seattle Arts & Lectures sidebar upcoming events. When I heard read at Border's near Westlake pre-millenium chnge, I stood in line to get my book signed afterwards. When I got to the altar, er, table, I told her how I discovered her, something like how I was in U dub's Suzallo doing research for a paper on Kathy Acker, and I noticed her books "nextdoor." i think she was a bit freaked out at the mention of Acker the Terrible. Nevertheless, Ackerman is fluffy writing on topics I like - "Realm of the Senses" or something.

Mary Oliver is also scheduled to read in the Arts & Lecture series. She's a pretty good poet, and was recommended to me by a gay co-worker while we were raising money for Chicken Soup Brigade in the early 90s.

I can't say that Anderson Cooper isn't overrated but I'd still let him do me.

Sex with virgins is totally overrated. I've taken dozens of guys' virginities, and it's fun performing oral on them, since they're so easy to please, fucking them is just miserable. "Okay, okay, put it in. Stop! Stop! Okay, another quarter inch. Take it out! Take it out! Okay, try again. Okay, a little more. Pull out! Pull out!" It's awful.

I read in the Regina Hackett's blog that Frizzelle is the new Stranger editor. How come this hasn't been Slogged?

China is overrated as an economic threat? Shit, there goes the premise of the sci fi novel I just started...

Cupcakes *are* overrated. A donut or a slice of pie trumps a cupcake any day.

FYI: The SLUT story just made national news. Read all about it.

agreed with sex-with-virgins thing. i mean, really. do the math, people. but cupcakes as #2? fucking CUPCAKES?

brad pitt is totally over-rated, as is the swiffer, at least in it's "wet jet" form. dry swiffers are pretty f'n rad.

Excuse me, but Jake Gyllenhaal and Elizabeth Edwards are both underrated. That is a fact!

Also, I went to Cupcake Royale to see what the fuss was about and I had two cupcakes. Both were dry. Cupcake Royale: Overrated.

In truth, "In-Out Lists" should have been #1...

Mr Poe, I am just not sure about that ensemble you are wearing today. It is just so...matronly looking. Where is Andre'? Andre' where are you Andre'?

Anyway, make it work. And the models will be here shortly; you will all have an hour to fit your models and to get them to the L'Oreal make-up studio and the TRESemme hair salon.

@15,

No way does pie trump a cupcake. Pies don't have frosting, duh.

Swiffers are not over-rated. I have a Swifer-Vacuum and it is seriously amazing if you have hardwood floors. It takes like 2 minutes to do all the floors in my apartment, probably would take 30 with a broom...

virgin sex with Anderson Cooper, covered in cupcake frosting. how could that ever be overrated??

Cupcakes is not overrated.

Sex with virgins ... um, sorry, have no opinion on that. I recall my first time was a bit awkward, but don't think I've ever had sex with a virgin.

Don't see why it should be such a big deal ...

@14 They were mostly college freshmen when I was a grad student. Mentioning that I was a TA was like Spanish fly to them.
