he might have been being a jerk -- but do you really think that's what he was going for? i think he was going for funny.

for instance, i've seen the decemberists answer a phone call during a show, and i saw it some other time as well. in both cases they joked how they were performing, and the audience laughed.

i've also seen an audience member get a call, and the speaker jokes by saying they'll wait until the call is answered.

maybe these jokes didn't go over, but if i were campaigning, even i'd know better than to be rude to my audience in public.
