hey, I don't get it. what's so inherently racist about being jewish?

That's remarkably subtle.

It's racist in that she managed to confuse Kanye West for Cee-Lo because, y'know, "they all look alike".

Oh you don't have to defend Sarah Silverman.... that girl is FIERCE. Sometimes she's not really all that funny but then she'll pull out something that totally makes up for it. Like "it's so cute the 50 Cent is still alive".....

I will always defend Sarah's intensely offensive comedy, and she has personally made fun of my very own vagina.

Oh, and... she's not racist, her jokes make fun of racism.

I loved how Sarah Silverman brought the feeling of uncomfortableness to the begining of the show, just brought the energy level way down. Some people might think she bombed or isn't funny, but...that wouldn't be me.

Until she did the face, the Britney Spears vagina joke wasn't working for me. Can you really bomb when you made Paris Hilton so nervous that she looks like she crapped her pants?

SS is great because she's getting away with telling those jokes. By law, she should be providing running commentary on all E! programming, other than Talk Soup. This country just can't be allowed to get any stupider and uninvolved.

That was one of two good jokes she delivered last night. Problem is, she had ten minutes of "material." After being horrified by Britney and bored by Sarah, I turned that shit off.

The General is right. She bombed. Of course, the VMA audience is too stupid, and too stoned, to get any of her jokes anyways.

I'd still hit it though.

She should've put a bunch of quarters up her nose..now THAT'S COMEDY!

Chico and/or the Man: The shoving of the quarters up the nose was never presented as comedy. It was pure athleticism.

David and/or Schamder: Oh. Well, I guess then...maybe she should've stuffed a bunch of quarters up her nose...now THAT'S ATHLETICISM!

Her Jewishness isn't racist. Her racist act is Jewey. And it doesn't matter how offended you get, because that's what she's going for. She wants you to laugh and cringe simultaneously, and at the same time, promulgate the image of racists as idiots. It's brilliant.

I think that SS is at her best at those kind of events. The pace is incredibly painful her jokes are mean and it always seems like a mistake that she's on. She de-glamorizes everything.

The only problem with SS's performance was that it just wasn't that funny. Whether it wasn't funny because it was too far below the nursing bra or for some other reason, meh. It's just really simple. Comedians get away with more outrageousness when it's funny.

Oh please. Are you all idiots? Silverman killed, and not least because she immediately followed Britney Spears.

@16 - yeah, but it was a pretty abysmal show overall, especially Brit. And Alicia Keys may have looked fine, but she sucked on stage ...

And what's with the blond look for a certain Canadian singer we all love? Good performance tho.

i always think that she is amazing because the pushes this so far. part of doing that, though, is that sometimes things aren't going to work. she could wuss out and tell kinda funny jokes all the time, but she's too awesome to do that. she goes all out, and sometimes is amazing, and sometimes she falls on her face.

@18 - "And what's with the blond look for a certain Canadian singer we all love?"

I didn't watch. Did Neil Young bleach his hair?

Sarah Silverman BOMBED- not so much because of her jokes, which for the most part were funny... more so for the LONG awkward pauses between jokes, when it seemed like she was either fishing for laughs or spacing on what her next bit was.

...And the Amy Winehouse bit at the end seemed like filler- the joke didn't go anywhere except to say she has a hook nose. With such a cornucopia of AW material to draw on, that was pathetic.

Comedy based on saying things some people may be thinking but wouldn't dare say can be very clever, cathartic and hilarious when the comedian strikes gold, but like the actor who throws all caution to the wind for an all-out performance, there's a significant danger of falling on one's face (think Faye Dunaway in "Mommie Dearest") - and instead of laughing, the audience just winces.

Sarah does what she does brilliantly. Does she go too far? You bet and frequently, but going too far is required and is a necessary risk for that kind of comedy.

Please note: Unlike Don Rickles who used to pick people randomly out of the audience and be merciless with them, Sarah reserves her razzing for people who are more or less deserving of the razz. She's also pretty rough on herself which is a concept that would be totally foreign to 99% of the audience at the VMA.

I wonder if Rickels liked it.

Badchonim have always used humor as a leveling device and Silverman fits in the Jewish comic tradition. Silverman is a tribute to all Jews. Most of the goyium are too ignorant to grasp her subtle biting humor.

The Stranger is the only newspaper in town intellectually robust enough to grasp Jewish humor in popular culture and write about local events from a Jewish perspective with a sense of humor - and you need a sense of humor living among all the racist white Seattlites.

I am not a fan of everything she disses, but her jokes are way too cheesy.

I live in Asia, and most jokes she said especially about Britney and Paris, are just the same old jokes I hear about everyday here in my place.. penises, vagina, sex, racism... so maybe that's why people in US find her funny?

I mean, she doesn't look funny at all in the first place, and her deliverance is just so poor. Look at Kathy Griffin! Well, I find her funny because she look funny or at least try to look funny, and then suddenly, it's like you wouldn't know the next thing she's gonna say.

Sometimes I think Sarah Silvermen is a little TOO in touch with her inner racist...
